Hi everyone! New to the site so not sure how it works. I’m wondering what to expect when my bunny Lily gets spayed tomorrow. She’s 6 months old. I have another bunny, Charlie, who’s about 1 and he got neutered a couple months ago. I know what to expect in general but because they’re different sexes it may affect them differently so just wondering if any of you guys has had their female bunnies spayed before and have any recommendations/suggestions. Very appreciated it!

My daisy hasn’t been spayed yet but I have asked this same question so i’ll tell you what I got from everyone spays are a lot tougher on a bun than neuters. don’t expect her to bounce back as fast as Charlie did. The girls tend to have a lot more pain as the surgery is more invasive. usually the boys will begin eating fairly soon but you will need to keep a close eye on her as girls tend to need more of a push to begin eating as they are in more pain. Did they give you pain meds with Charlie? if so then you already know how to give them. She will definitely come home with more pain meds than him. basically take everything you had to to with Charlie and multiply it. She will need longer to recover, more help to begin eating and drinking and probably a few more days of pain meds. the biggest thing is the eating. once she begins to eat you know you’re over the big hump. I’m so nervous to have daisy spayed just because everyone has said its so much harder on them than the neuter. but we are giving her time to gain some weight so it will be safer. I think the biggest thing is to not freak out when she doesn’t go back to her normal self in the same amount of time as Charlie did. She will do great-its you that will need a hug!

Thanks! She got spayed early today and I got her back in the afternoon. The vet told me she nibbled but I haven’t seen her do it since I brought her home, she’s mostly just laying in her cage. Charlie approaches her and licks her head once but smells her and leaves they game me pain meds for five days, will that be enough?

i think thats plenty! they only give 2 days for a neuter so that sounds right. and if she still seems to be in pain after that you can ask your vet about more medicine but i doubt she will need more. Be careful about letting charlie near her. they often just want to be left alone. and you don’t want any physical interaction while she heals. Since they already have a bond i don’t think you need to completely separate them but definitely limit it to a kiss or 2. he can probably already tell she just needs to rest. You want to make sure she eats SOMETHING a few nibbles at the very least. the longer she doesnt eat the harder it will be to make her eat. move her food close to her and a water bowl. don’t make her work for it as she probably just wants to sit in one spot for a while. as long as everything is moving along tummy wise then she’s doing well. if something seems off dont hesitate to call your vet. oh and i’ve also been told the females need more help keeping their body temp up so keep an eye on that!

She just ate! Well she nibbled on some celery but it’s progress and Charlie has kept away, I thought that wasn’t good but I guess you’re right and he’s just giving her some space. I gave her a light blanket to cuddle with to keep her wam but I’ll keep an eye on her. Thanks for all the help

I checked her plate this morning and she ate all her veggies and I saw her nibbling on pellets but she’s moving around a lot and seems to want to get out of her cage, is that good?

Hi and welcome to BB Mariagrazzia.

Yes it is very good that she is eating. Life saving in fact. She can continue eating as much as you want to give her. Her wound will take a while to heal – 2 weeks.

I kept my ‘Zou’ in a cage for a week and supervised if she came out to play. She shouldn’t be allowed to binky or to run or to go up and down stairs or steps atleast for a week, if not two. I presume you will be going back for a checkup visit? You can then let her if the vet says its OK. It’s a pain to keep her contained for a week or 2 but it’s worth her not compromising her wound and getting an infection. If she’s back to normal already that’s great. I kept a hot water bottle and blanket near Zou to keep her temp up.

PS – eating is 1 out of 3. You’re out of the woods when she’s peeing and pooping perfectly too !!

So lilys eating, peeing, and pooping just fine which is a relieve and shes more active than she should be which worries me a bit but I guess she knows her limits and what hurts and doesn’t. However I am worried that Charlie has become hostile towards her. He lounges at her and chases her when she comes too close, I’m super worried! Why is he acting that way?

They’re like injured children/Odette…. they think they’re superman but its only in their head. so just make sure no jumping up or down. Re the lunging I suspect she’s come back from vets with diff scents so try to avoid direct contact via a gate (?) & then rebond when she’s healed. It shldnt take long.
