Hi all! About two days ago I noticed my Beans was acting a little off – not active, not responding to food, generally disinterested in things around him and hiding under the bed more than usual. I kept an eagle eye on his poop for the next two hours, and when he did finally go, there were very few, small, and irregular shaped. I check his tummy regularly, and when I did that night, it did not feel out of the ordinary. I took him to the vet first thing the next morning (yesterday) fearing this might be stasis, although the vet said Beans looked fine (eyes clear, no poopy bottom, tummy not bloated, teeth healthy), and he prescribed oral antibiotics (Enrotril) incase there was bacteria or a parasite inside the gut. I picked up some Simethicone from the pharmacy after reading it might help with any bloating. I have a couple of questions I am desperately hoping someone will be able to answer as I am going mad with worry..

        1. What is happening to Beans? does this sound like bloat or stasis, or neither?
        2. Beans seemed really drowsy after his second dose of antibiotics and simethicone last night. Is this normal?
        3. This morning I saw he had eaten the parsley I left out for him last night, but he is not eating hay. How can I encourage him to eat more hay, as I have read this is crucial to a bun’s recovery?
        4. He has not done a wee or poop since coming back from the vet! Should I wait a little longer to see if the toilet habits return to normal?

Thank you to anyone who is able to help out.. Sorry for the long post, Beans has never been sick like this before, and I am just a mess.

This definitely sounds like gi slow down. However, it’s impossible for anyone but a vet to pinpoint the cause. Several causes can be dental issues, diet, hair ingestion to name a few.

Keep up with the simethicone. That nor the antibiotics should not cause him to be drowsy.

Are you confident this was a rabbit savyy vet? My vets first go-to is always an X-ray to check for gas or a blockage. If there is no blockage, a gut stimulant can be given. Sub Q fluids are also very important and can help to get things moving along the gi tract.

If your bunny continues to not eat/not poop, I would either try to find another vet or call this vet and discuss your concerns.

Thank you so much for your reply LittlePuffyTail. Admittedly, this particular vet is not rabbit savvy – my regular vet is on leave an not returning until next week (I have made an appointment with her for next Tuesday).

Beans did perk up a little after the simethicone this morning, although I will continue to monitor him the best I can when I get back from work.

I reccomend not taking a rabbit to a non savvy vet. Rabbits are complicated animals, and non savvy vets might perscribe the wrong thing. Is there a vet you can take him to? Even if its very far away?

Sorry I should have clarified, the vet that saw Beans does deal with rabbits, but is just not as experienced with them as my usual vet (at the same clinic which specialises in exotic animals). I’ve taken your advice on, Benthebunny, and have booked in Beans to see another vet in the interim – earliest appointment was this Saturday, although they said if Beans goes downhill fast, then call in for an emergency consult.

I’ll keep you posted and fingers crossed!

Oh thank goodness, I think on this site, there was an incident where a non savvy vet gave the wrong medications, and it ended up neing fatal, but I dont know if it was on this site or not.

They prescribed the Australian equivalent of Baytril, so I’m not worried about the type of antibiotic. I am curious why an antibiotic was prescribed though. If there was no evidence of an infection, it seems counterproductive in this case since antibiotics can actually lead to decreased appetite.

Standard treatment for suspected stasis is gas and gut motility drugs, pain reliever (NSAID such as Metacam), fluids, and physical things like keeping bunny warm and moving bunny around/massaging the tummy. And, of course, force feeding with critical care if necessary. As LPT said, we don’t have any way of knowing why your bunny is experience GI stasis. Bunnies can stop eating for SO many reasons. The best thing to do is get your bunny stabilized, eating, pooping, etc. and make an appointment with a vet that can do a thorough assessment of the problem. It could be anything from tooth issues to digestive issues to pain.

I understand how worrying it is when a bunny has GI, is bunny running about now? With GI it is important that he rests and has a run about, its a bit like when we can’t go to the bathroom the doctor will tell us to have a long walk and then some medicine and go to sleep, maybe a gentle tummy massage would help a little, but very very gentle.

Thank you for your response LBJ. I have been giving Beans some tummy massages, and it does seem to help. While on the phone booking the appointment with a different clinic, I was told it would be wise to be feeding critical care in the meantime if Beans is not eating, so I will be picking some up after work today. Thank you again everyone for your replies! I hope to come back with some good news soon.

Hi Charlies Angel, Beans is a little active very sporadically. He mostly just sits in one spot now though.

I have just gotten home and Beans has just done one half formed half splodgy poo (a little bit like a cecal but not), so I guess this is a bad sign. He has not touched any of the parsley I left out this morning, and looks like he hasn’t touched his water. he does not look sickly though, he is still grooming himself and hopping about now and then. His tummy still feels normal as well. I have just fed him critical care, along with the antibiotics and simethicone. I’m going to try and move the vet appointment sooner..

Hope your bun is feeling better soon.

The wet poo could be caused by the antibiotics. Some buns are more sensitive.

Hope there will be a good update soon.

Beans was taken to the vet last night and kept there overnight to be kept on fluids, antibiotics and pain killers. He went in for an xray this morning and the vet had said Beans was doing well, but seems there was a blockage in the intestine. She has just called me again and said Beans has taken a turn for the worse and they are going into surgery now. I need your thoughts and prayers please if you can spare them… Waiting for a call back to let me know how he went.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and vibes. Beans had a less than 50% chance of making it out of the surgery, and so of course I am over the moon that he has survived it. The blockage has been removed (a mixture of hair, fibre, and mucous) and the vet tells me now there is a 50/50 chance he will make a recovery from the surgery itself. We are not out of the woods yet, although we’re halfway there… I hope to come back with more good news. Thank you all again, I’m still praying for my little fuzz.

Hello again all, I am thankfully coming back with some great news. Beans has beaten all odds, and has started to eat on his own again (although small amounts, I am grateful he’s eating at all) and there have been no complications following the surgery, which is a fantastic result. I’m sure many of you would know how slim the odds are that a rabbit would survive a gastrointestinal surgery, and after that, the odds of recovering from the surgery itself are not stacked in our favour. My vet tells me she had not seen a recovery like this before!

I am so proud of my Beany bum, and so incredibly thankful for everyone’s kind words and support throughout this extremely difficult time. I frequented the forums of Binky Bunny before I got Beans, to get as much first-hand information as I could to make sure I was armed with the right knowledge to own a bun, and I’d like to thank the administrators of Binky Bunny for having the note at the top of every page, reminding all visitors that a bunny who has not eaten or pooped in 12-24 hours, is an emergency situation. Without this note engrained in my mind from the beginning, I may not have thought to seek help as quickly as I did, and Beans’ fate would surely have been different.

For anyone living in Sydney, Australia, looking for a top notch vet clinic with a wealth of knowledge on rabbits, I could not recommend Bird and Exotics Veterinarian in Green Square more. The vet and nurses there saved Beans’ life through careful observation and quick action – I am forever grateful.

Beans is coming home this afternoon! Thank you all again for investing your thoughts and vibes to our ordeal. I am so so happy Binky Bunny exists – such a wonderful, supportive, and knowledgeable community.

Also to answer your question Vienna Blue, the vet says it looked like carpet or towel fibres, although not enough to cause the blockage itself. It seemed more of Beans’ hair that was the main cause. I’ll be sure to brush him twice as often from here on out!  It’s strange because I only noticed one ‘string-of-pearls’ poop during his recent shed, and after that I did brush him twice a week! Not enough I guess, or perhaps not soon enough.

Yes, I brush my buns everyday during a heavy shed. And while they eat, I gently use my fingers to de-fluff them, and this also helps. Praying Bean’s bowels and appetite return to normal in no time, and stay that way.

I’m so very glad that they found the blockage in time and Beans made it through surgery and recovered well. I’ve also always heard that GI surgery on bunnies has a very poor prognosis. You’ve got a little fighter

Hi, i hope everything gets better for Beans super soon!! My bunny Rupunzel experienced this and i ended up taking her to an emergency vet over a weekend. It really sounds like the GI as bunz are very sensitive, however i wanted to share that the vet gave me, at the time a couple oral things for imflamation and pain, etc. But I always keep a bag of Oxbows “Critical Care” for vegetarian animals on hand, for my bunnies, and anytime i notice a slight difference in thier eating, pooping, water intake, etc i immediately give them some critical care, with a feeding syringe. it is a powder food that you can only get from a vet, full of necessary vitamins and minerals, but it works!! it hydrates and nourishes them and gets thier GI track back in action. its a powder and you mix it with luke warm water, (per instructions) and i just try to feed her till she lets me know she is full, even if instructions calls for more, can be liquidish for force feeding, then as bunz appetite comes back over a period of days, i am able to mix it less liquidy as she will start being helpful and eager to eat it, however my other bunny Elizabeth acts like its detestful the whole time, but ultimately she knows that i am giving it to her to help her. And within a couple days, bunny will be pooping, peeing, eating and drinking again. When i found a regular vet, she ordered some and keeps the critical care available at the office now. I really hope this helps and that your bunny is back to his happy self again soon!!

You all are a lovely lot – I’ll be sure jump out of the shadows and lurk no more. Kahllizja, thank you for your note – we are feeding him critical care twice a day as per the vet’s instructions.

I am once again sick with worry – Beans has returned home last night, and I have been given Flagyl, Entrotril, Meloxicam, and Protexin to give to Beans twice a day. Giving him the meds has proven to be a struggle, as he’s not taking them willingly, and I need to get him in a bunny burrito. He kicks and struggles and I am so worried he’s going to open the staples at the surgical site or cause some internal damage.

I was told to look out for bloating and signs of pain, as well as monitor his poop situation (as these are red flags to his progress) and they are worried about peritonitis. Unfortunately he has only passed 3 little balls of poop, and his left side (close to the ribs) is feeling very firm. I’m not sure if this is normal internal swelling due to the surgery, or something worse. He’s not eating much and I’ve heard him grind his teeth a couple of times. They can’t legally give me advice over the phone, so we’re heading back in tomorrow. If anyone has any bunny post op knowledge, and can shed some light on my worries, it would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure how it’d work with stress, but I learned that a pair of calm and confident hands (which I do not have at all) was what Chito needed. This can regrettably be a bit pricey too, though, sadly.

Teeth grinding is pain. It can take a day or two for the pain meds to kick in. Hard belly could be a number of things. Clot, constipation, thickening, inflammation, your vet will be able to tell more. Sorry to hear the burrito is difficult. I have a bunny who doesn’t need a burrito (crazy relaxed), and a fighter from hell. My little fighter – is so bad I can’t pick her up in my arms. I have to trap her in a carrier. The burrito is very difficult with her. I focus on wrapping her more securely. I imagine that I’m wrapping her up as if she were in a “burrito-sock”. Can’t move much in a sock, or a tight sleeping bag. Kicking will definitely not be good for him. I agree with beebum too. Sometimes a calm hand achieves better results. All animals tend to react differently around strangers and strange places. One of my dogs behaves well for the groomer, but tries to bite my hand off when I attempt to bath/groom him. So perhaps your vet could do a burrito/feeding and your bunny could see that it is not so bad, or you could see how to do it more effectively. I always like a demo If I’m struggling to get something right with the animals. I would also add applejuice to the critical care mixture to make it even more yummy.

Also try petting and talking softly to your bunny while in a burrito. I would also try to find the most irresistible treat in the world, and use it to start encouraging the bunny to eat.

Beans was doing so much better this morning when I took him to the vet. She said he was healing perfectly well and just to give him more time to recover. She put some more staples in where he had torn some out and we went home. When I came back from work I saw some blood on the carpet and I lifted Beans up to see what he had done. I’ll spare you all the grizzly detail, but he had torn open the surgical site. We rushed to the emergency clinic, and were told no surgery would be able to fix him. We said goodbye tonight.

Thank you all again, you’ve all been a great support throughout this difficult time. I really did think he would make it… I’ll love him forever.
