Hello. We are (were) new to having a house bunny. Did lots of research. Purchased a 10wk old bunny and he developed diarrhea and passed away in just a few days. We thought he was just sickly and rescued an adult from a local rescue. He was a healthy 2yr old and the next day we brought him home he also developed loose stool and looked listless. Called the rescue and discussed housing, food, litter ect. At her advise we took away pellets and Timothy hay and just offered grass hay and water. He immediately improved and we slowly began adding pellets back in with the already offered orchard grass hay. He became completely normal. I slowly started adding back Timothy hay but he didn’t seem to eat it much in the hay rack. I pulled it out and just put it loose in his cage and he went to town. The next day I left town for the night. When I returned late the next day I checked on him and realized he had complete water for stool and looked terrible. Planned to take him the vet as soon as they opened. He passed overnight. The only connection is the Timothy hay that we can assume. It was the same batch from the young bunny. DuMore brand? No mold, no bugs, no weird smell. But I’m scared to get another. What if it was something else?? So terrified to kill another bunny! We thought we were doing everything right!!

It sounds like your older bun could have been allergic to Timothy, its uncommon but still possible. As per the baby bun, they are prone to a lot of sickness that is hard to detect until its too late. It likely wasnt your fault your baby passed, but please know for next time, any sign of diarrhea in rabbits demands a call and likely a visit to the vets asap ((((binky free little buns))))

If you get another bun, i would look into adopting another healthy adult If the hay concerns you, throw it out and get a new batch

I’m very sorry for your losses.

Young bunnies are very fragile. They can get diarrhea from a parasite (coccidia) or bacterial overgrowth in the intestines because their GI microbiota isn’t fully developed, esp if they were weaned very young.

That the 2-year old bun also got watery diarrhea is more difficult to understand. It’s not a common thing in adult bunnies. You often see sticky poop, but that’s never watery, just sticky or loose. The rescue gave you appropriate advice for dealing with sticky poop. There’s always the possibility that bad bacteria managed to colonize his gut and that led to diarrhea and his demise. Rabbits’ guts are sensitive to stress, and getting a new home is stressful – even if it’s in a good way, it still can upset the system.

Chuck out the timothy in case it was compromized in some way, clean everything with 10% chlorine bleach or Virkon S (a disinfectant for horse-stables originally, but very useful for people with house bunnies because it’s non-toxic, doesn’t stain or smell). Wash fabric toys and blankies in sth like 140 F or 60 C, and you should be good.

Rabbits are fragile and can go downhill really fast, so diarrhea always requires emergency vet care.
