        Hey guys,

I was wondering what kind of smells does the room you keep your bunnies have? Do you keep them in your own room or do you have a separate room for them? I realized that when I keep them in my room, it begins to smell like strong wood because of their litter pellets. I really want to control this smell because I’m really sensitive towards smelly things and it can give me a really big headache. I feel like my room gets stuffy too (i dont know why) so it makes everything worse I don’t have any other option but to keep them in my room because of University regulations (I live in an uni housing facility). I usually keep my windows open but I get scared to leave them open at night for obvious reasons AND its going to start getting cold in Cali soon so I don’t want to catch a cold as I am not used to cold weathers ( I come from an island). Is it okay if I leave an air freshener thing out?…. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me some ideas so I can give my bunnies a good quality life while also not harming myself in the process.

        THANKS!

My basement smells, because my bunny is very territorial. on the 20th he is getting neutered. What you could do to freshen up the room, is use Yesterdays news litter. it absorns smell really good.

@Benthebunny: I do use yesterdays news litter… It doesn’t help My bunnies are already spayed and litter trained. They only pee in the litter boxes I have out for them, but I just don’t know why the room ends up smelling. It baffles me so much!

You could try changing litters, to a paper based one such as Yesterday’s News or Carefresh. Or you could try Oxbow Bene Terra Eco Straw litter. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=19819 I sometimes use that, because the aspen pellets I use have a strong wood smell that I am not that fond of. To mask the wood smell of the aspen pellets, I put a layer of Carefresh Naturals on top.

You could also try using an electronic air cleaner, just the plain kind, not the kind with an ionizer, which is supposed to be not good for rabbits. Since those clean the air and take out smells, hopefully one would rid the room of the wood smell. You would have to keep the cord protected, of course.

I see that there were more replies while I was posting. I’m not sure why you would have a wood smell if you use Yesterday’s News. I used that in the past, but never noticed a wood smell from it.  I assumed that you were using a wood based pellet, such as Feline Pine, Aspen Supreme, wood stove pellets or horse stall pellets.

The electronic air cleaners are supposed to help with pet odors/litter box odors.

@tobyluv oh I used to use the wood based pellets but started using yesterdays news a few months back. when I use yesterdays news it smells like soggy newspaper… when i use the aspen or other wood pellets it smells like super strong wood. Maybe I’ll try to clean their litter box twice a day instead.
I clean their litter box almost daily but if im really busy or tired I’ll clean it every other day. I 90% of the time clean it daily tho! I have a feeling that the soggy newspaper smell might have been because it was starting to get hot in Cali and thus the smell kind of stuck to everything. I’ll try the carefresh idea and the electronic air cleaners! I just really hate coming back from a long day to open a room that smelled like soggy newspapers or strong wood

You might also want to try the Oxbow Bene Terra Eco Straw, that I linked to in my first post. To me, the pellets have very little scent. It can be a bit pricey. Drs. Foster and Smith does put in on sale from time to time, and they are cheaper than Pet Smart every day anyway. I buy almost all my food and supplies from Drs. Foster and Smith. They normally charge a $5.99 shipping fee unless your order is $49 or more, but lately, you only have to buy $19 worth of merchandise to get free shipping. Once you buy from them and get on their email list, you will sometimes get offers of free shipping, with any amount.

I don’t think there’s any odor associated with our two Flemish sisters living in our house.  They are a year old and very big bunnies.  We replace their litter boxes daily…yes the two bunnies have three litter boxes in our house.  Bunny poop doesn’t smell bad…scoop some bunny poop onto the palm of you hand and have a smell….It’ll have a herbal smell with an onion overtone. The only smell you’ll get from a rabbit in your house is if you don’t change their litter box and their urine rots. Rotten urine will make an unpleasant odor.

Please be informed that if you don’t want bad bunny smells in your house, the bunnies do not either want bad smells where they live. Rabbits are very clean animals.

@flemmishwhite of course I know that bunnies are really clean animals haha. I’ve had my dwarf holland lops for a few months now and know that their poops don’t smell. It’s their urine. The bunnies themselves don’t smell either, its their litter box that gives me the problem. You have to understand I live in an university housing facility in America. Many of these facilities are small, cramped, and sometimes have poor ventilation systems hence why I keep the windows open so my bunnies can have some fresh air. I scrub their litter boxes as best as I could every time I clean them out which is almost daily too. I don’t know why but maybe I’m just really sensitive to odor. I get headaches rather easily from the smallest smells.
