        Hi everyone,

I have 2, 3 month old female rabbits. Yesterday I noticed a couple of squished stools and one of them had a turd stuck to her. So I’ve been monitoring them very closely. Today I noticed a couple more squished poops, the same rabbit had a few more stuck to her and they were larger than normal, egg shaped and sticky. I also noticed a couple of those in the litter box. I found 2 turds stuck together with what looked like hair (string of pearls as they call it), and 1 turd with some mucus. And a couple very small ones. And a grape cluster poop. It also smells very different.

I feed them a very small amount of pellets in the morning, unlimited Timothy hay all day, and they get greens in the evening (romaine, kale and pieces of cilantro/basil here and there). I know most people say veggies at that age is not good but this was actually recommended to me by a vet when I first got them after the other bunny had a few stomach issues. Since I have started the greens they have done great and have been on them for about 3 weeks. (I’ve only had them a month). The only diet change has been, I gave them some spinach last night (which they have tried before in small amounts). I gave them each 1.5 leaves which is a little more than they’ve had before.

When I have googled all of these symptoms I’m finding it sounds like there many different things going on which I know can’t be everything
        Large egg shaped: mega colon
hair in stool: from grooming herself
        Sticky stools: diet changes
        Smelly: infection
        Small ones: gi stasis

I’m so confused by all of these things because I know it’s not all of them.

By the way she is still very playful, still eating hay constantly and eating morning and night which makes me think she’s ok.

Can anyone offer any advice? Could it be the spinach? Would this cause large sticky poop?

I would stop giving the spinach. The egg shaped poop’s are not concerning ifshe has not been doing it her whole life. The grape cluster is normal, search on
Ine “cecetrops” does that look right? The small poops do not sound good. Encourage hay, and if she is showing signs of pain (shifting weight, not eating, not moving, teeth grinding, eyes half closed) I would go see your vet as soon as possible.

Thank you for your response! I definitely plan on stopping the spinach! It was a cecotrop! Do you know if it can mean they are sick if they don’t eat it? since she is having the other strange poops it makes me wonder. I’m going to keep watching very closely and will take her to the vet if it gets worse.

It is not alarming if she ignores one, but if she ignores a lot, I would reccomend taking her to Th vet.

It sounds like you might just be seeing cecotropes. Unlike most other mammals, rabbits produce two types of droppings, fecal pellets (the round, dry ones you usually see in the litterbox) and cecotropes.

A normal CECOTROPE resembles a dark brown mulberry, or tightly bunched grapes. It is composed of small, soft, shiny pellets, each coated with a layer of rubbery mucus, and pressed into an elongate mass. The cecotrope has a rather pungent odor, as it contains a large mass of beneficial cecal bacteria. When the bunny ingests the cecotrope, the mucus coat protects the bacteria as they pass through the stomach.

in regards to the two turds stuck together by hair-yes it probably is just extra fur that your rabbit has digested while grooming themselves. Rabbits do not through-up so the extra fur gets digested-only thing you can do is make sure you spend a good amount of time petting/brushing your rabbit to help get rid of the excess fur.

                  hope this helps!
