Now that the buns are outside (with running time indoors in the afternoon/evening), I’ve given them a dig box of top soil.

Unfortunately, I’m beginning to wonder if I should just have given them a square of carpet (the mess would be reduced too!) because they don’t seem to quite get the idea. Indeed, they appear to believe it’s an inferior litter box.

Today we buried three tops of carrots in there but without the top exposed they didn’t seem to realise they were in there. I ended up putting a whole carrot in to encourage them to dig it out and will check to see how they did in the morning.

They only occasionally have carrot so… what else could I put in there for them to dig out?

They’re very food motivated. Not particularly interested in shaped pieces of wood. Love cardboard. Albus likes picking things up with his front paws and throwing them.

You could try hiding small cardboard boxes in the dirt (easy to make without glue using notch method). Maybe hide some hay inside the boxes so they can sniff the boxes out. Easier yet, hide TP rolls for their cardboard fix.

Albus might like a cloth ball or willow ball to toss about.
