unfortunately I have allergies to my bunny. I love her but I feel it would be better to rehome her. I already feel like I don’t take her out enough and allergies make it harder. I’m also going into high school which will also make it harder. If she is rehomed I feel she will be much happier and will get lots of love. Although I feel sad for this I believe she will be happier with a much more responsible and experienced owner. Please tell me what you think.

I also think this is the best. She will find a nice home, where she will be loved. You can give her to a rabbit rescue, or a humane society. Please do not beat yourself up, you are still young, you should not be stuck caring for a bunny.

Thanks I think that’s what I’m going to do. It’s not like I abuse or neglect her but she just doesn’t get all of the time and love she deserves. My mom surprised me with her last October because she knew I wanted a bunny. I wasn’t exactly prepared for her yet but I tried my best. I haven’t told my parents what I have been thinking yet but I’m planning on telling them. My rabbit was amazing right from day one. She trusted my and even snuggled but sometimes it’s hard for me to give her what she needs. I’m going to give it a few days and go from there. If I decide to rehome her she will go quickly because she is a beautiful well behaved Dutch bunny. Thanks for the support.

My bunny is a Dutch too. It is possible to take allergy meds, but that’s only if it is ok with your doctor and parents.

Are you sure that it’s your rabbit you are allergic to? Some people have thought that, then it turned out to be the hay or the litter or bedding. Timothy hay is often a culprit in allergies. Orchard grass is less likely to cause problems. Certain brands of hay might be dustier than others, which could cause problems. Certain kinds of bedding or litter can also cause problems. You should do some experimenting to make sure what the problem is.

One reason I am saying this is because I know how hard it is to find good homes for rabbits. The sanctuary where I volunteer is always full and I know that many other rescues are. If you try to find a home for your rabbit on your own, make sure that the people know all about rabbit care and their ways and that they are prepared to keep her for her life. So many people do not realize what goes into rabbit care and they are soon wanting to be rid of them. We are asked to take so many unwanted rabbits and it’s very depressing to have to tell people that we are full. I would not recommend listing her on Craig’s List or similar places, as you may get people who want her for reasons other than as a pet.

Even if it turns out that you are in fact allergic to your rabbit and not the hay or litter, if it is a mild allergy, many people have kept their rabbits, making sure that they are well groomed (someone else would do that) that the area the rabbit lives in is kept vacuumed, and they also use an electronic air cleaner.

If it is your bun and not bedding/hay like previously suggested, and if allergy meds arnt helping you at all, it is definitely for the best to rehome her. When i was younger, my mom had to rehome our last bunny because she became so allergic to them that her allergy meds stopped helping, and she couldnt breathe any more

Hi LDB – it all dépends on what is behind your question.

If tomorrow you found out you weren’t allergic to the bunny at all and it was indeed the certain type of hay, would you be ecstatic that you could keep bunny?
Or is it still in your head that you would prefer not to have her?

Surely your Mum has seen you sneezing (if that is your symptom)- what does she say?

It would be great and also for your peace of mind, if you could rehome her to a safe and loving environment.

Hello everyone! I’m so sorry I didn’t get back to everyone. I still have my bunny Gepetto, I just make sure I take her out every day. Unfortunately I have to give her away now because I’m moving and no pets are allowed Her previous owner said to contact her if the bunny ever needs a new home, so now she gets to go back to her old owner ( the owner is very good)! I have a new little problem: I haven’t had much time for grooming this past week because of moving, so she has some matted fur near one of her eyes. I want to get her all cleaned up before her owner takes her ( today or tomorrow). Does anyone know how to clean matted fur safely? Thanks, and sorry in advance.

I’m sorry that you have to part with her, I’m glad her previous owner can take her again.

Matted fur is difficult to comb out, so it’s probably best to cut it off, not too close to the skin. It will grow back, of course. But wait a bit and see if you get more answers from people who have lionhead buns – they should know about matted facial hair.

Thank you for the update! Better late than never

Thanks Bam! Luckily the fur isn’t too bad. I’m going to see what everyone thinks I just want her to be nice and clean for her owner. Thanks again for responding!

Hello everyone! Gepetto went back to her owner on Monday, they were so happy to see each other! She is going to be a very happy bunny. Her owner is very kind and she said I can visit Gepetto anytime. Wanna know something crazy? Last year when we got the rabbit, her owner said she was pretty sure she was 5 years old. When we went to her house to give her the rabbit, she told me that her daughter said she was 11, she’s got a lot of energy for such a old rabbit! Anyways, thanks everyone for the support
