Hello! I have a nine week old mini lop rabbit that I recently adopted. I have been following the House Rabbit Society guide for what to feed him, but he seems to be to be a bit overweight. What is the average weight for a juvenile mini lop? Am I correct to be providing unlimited pellets? (That’s what it says to do on the House Rabbit Society website)

I’m not sure what the weight for a young mini lop should be. You may be able to find that information on a mini lop breeder’s website.

Even though most or all diet guidelines for young rabbits say unlimited pellets up until about 6 months of age, you don’t want to overfeed them. Don’t keep filling up the bowl when he empties it, if you feel that he is eating too much. Set some sort of limit, or cut back a little. Make sure that he has plenty of hay at all times. Has he had a vet checkup yet? A vet should be able to determine if he is overweight or not.

Odette was just under 3 lbs at 16 weeks old when weighed at her vet last week. She looks thin to me, but the vet said she was fine. Of course, she’s almost twice your bunny’s age. But, I’ve read there’s a lot of variation in mini lop sizes. I wouldn’t necessarily worry yet because they hit a growth spurt around 12 weeks and get taller and leaner. Odette grew taller and lost her chubby baby fat afterward. Her face is broader, but her body is lean.

I do provide unlimited pellets as long as Odette is eating her hay. When she seems to shun her hay, I cut the pellets back a bit. Also, as Tobyluv said, I don’t refill her bowl. I feed her in the morning and evening. If she is completely out, I’ll give her a handful. But, she rarely eats all her pellets.
