We have been treating my baby for the past 20 days with Pancur for the paraside E.Cuniculi.  Last night after coming home from my aunts memorial service I noticed my baby was limp in his cage.  I picked him up and he fought to be let down, as soon as I put him on the ground he stood for one second, attempted to walk and fell over. We picked him up right away and held on to him in fear that the parasite had taken over his brain. (as explained to us by his vet prior to his diagnosis 20 days early of what to expect with this parasite). We laid him on our bed which he laid there breathing but not moving.  When he first attempted moving he would try and stand and had no strength so would fall over.  I laid next to him petting him softly, whispering I loved him, praying for him to be alright.  Within minutes he started kicking his hind legs away from me and his neck started to constrict sideways.  I picked him up as he was convulsing and making grunt noises, I knew he was passing. I wanted him to be wrapped in my arms.  After his passing we stood together crying and telling him we all loved him very much.  Today… a million questions consume my mind.  The number one of course being “why” and “what happened”.  He had been so healthy up until ‘that moment.  I heart is literally shattered right now.

That is heartbreaking. I am sorry for the loss of your aunt and your beautiful bunny. I wish you peace as you grieve.

I’m so sorry. Both about your aunt and your bunny.

The EC parasite is really sneaky and can invade the heart as well as the brain. It invades tissues that have a really high blood flow. It suppresses the immune system. It can become too much for a little bunny. Treatment isn’t always successful, but it’s the only thing you can do and you did that. I’m glad you were with him when he passed.

ETA: I moved this to the Q&A section. The Lounge is more about fun/light stuff.

I am so sorry. My heart goes out to you both.

Everyone looks for why and there’s never a good reason to lose anyone.

You did everything you needed to and more, you loved him and comforted him. That is everything.

I’m so sorry for your losses – both your Aunt and your Bunny.
In May my brother-in-law passed, and shortly afterwards one of our rabbits died of GI Stasis.
I understand the pain of the double loss, and know it will be very hard.

You were with him at the end, and he knew he was loved and cared for. That’s important – for him and for you.
Thank you for that, and for doing everything you possibly could to make sure he had a good and happy life,
and that his passing was not lonely. Take time to mourn all of the loss you’re experiencing.

I knew nothing of this parasite.  I’ll have to google this one.

We were so sad when our 11 1/2 old Bunny died.  She had became a member of the household.  I know how you feel.
