I’ve never liked shavings because they could produce dust (or be too dusty) and irritate the nose or be inhaled…I have been always using wood pellets (the kind for heaters), making sure to buy the 100% natural without added chemicals. You could try to see if you find those, if you’re not feeling safe with the shavings

I wasn’t implying that you’d buy a poor quality product for your bun just suggested an alternative one that in my opinion is more solid and less likely to produce dust

i know, right now were tight on money. do you know where to get good bedding in ontario canada?( just so you kniw i use a thin layer of shavings on the bottom to absorb the pee

stove pellets should be cheaper in a cold country like canada… I’m all the way across the ocean (Italy) and 15kgs are sold for 5 euros (4.50 USD or something of the like). I buy about 3 big bags of them per year.
If your bun is *not* a chewer you can try to use advertisement fliers (the bulky ones given in malls), top them with a little amount of bedding and change them frequently (that’s how they do at our vet hospital)

my bun is a big chewer so the paper cant work. But the stove pellets sound good. i will go see what they have at walmart.

Hey Ben, I’m also from Ontario!

Wood Stove Pellets are great, just like Muchelle said, and easy to pick up at any Rona store!

                          40lb bags are typically 4.99-5.99

I’ve emailed the company that makes this: $5.99/40lbs
                          http://www.rona.ca/en/hardwood-pellets-40-lb-30505000
I’m waiting to hear back to make sure there are no additives (adhesives) because the bag doesn’t say that outright and the website says that “and briquettes are 100% natural and additive-free.” but I’m not sure if that means pellets too.

I have been using these: $4.99/40 lbs
                          http://www.rona.ca/en/wood-pellets-79645000–1
Which say “100% softwood. Premium grade for heating. Environmentally safe, 100% natural. No additive. “

In terms of wood shavings, though I don’t prefer to use them, you can use them if they are Aspen (first choice of all shavings). Pine shavings should not be used unless it specifies that they are kiln dried, and cedar shavings should never be used.

Hrrumph! No, the company hasn’t gotten back to me yet.

I have a few more days worth of litter and was curious to try the hardwood kind.

I’ll keep you posted: when I know – you’ll know Ben.

Good article about wood shavings and rabbits.

We have two plastic litterboxes, they were bought on-line and they are dog litterboxes. The Flemish girls are PBB’s. (Pretty Big Bunnies). We also have some cardboard boxes lined with oat hay, they like to jump in, eat the hay and/or the cardboard( !). A big litter box is in their pen, another in the hall, and the cardboard boxes are under the dining room table. We line the plastic litter boxes with newspaper and cover the paper with oat hay. We clean all the litter boxes daily. Sometimes we just throw the cardboard litter boxes away and start a new cardboard box.

We are so lucky to live near a feed and grain store whose customers are mostly horse owners, so the oat hay is much cheaper, and fresher, than the tiny expensive bags of hay at the pet stores. A big bag of oat hay costs $5.00. We use about 3 bags a week. A bale of oat hay costs $25 and weighs 100 pounds. There’s about 15 bags of oat hay in a bale, so it’d be much cheaper to buy the entire bale. However, a bale is pretty big and I don’t have anyplace to keep it at home, even if I could get it home.
