        Hello,

My bunny is named Ciabatta. She is a 2 year old neutered female dutch. I adopted her form the shelter 1 year ago and she has been in great health since.

A couple of days ago I noticed she wasn’t eating her carrots and less of the pellets. She still ate her kale, parsley and hay. Her poops and energy level was normal so I watched for a couple of days. She seemed to be ignoring hard foods which made me concerned she had a dental issue. And once I gave her a raisin and she ate it but shook her head oddly for a few seconds.

Last night she seemed much better. I bought new carrots in case the other ones were bad in some way and she ate 2 of the 4! Though she does usually eat all of them…

She also ate a hard treat no problem. She still sort of stayed away from the pellets. Though it is hard to tell since they are the healthy kind and she only eats little bitefuls. She chewed her toys and some wood on her cage as per usual with no issue.

With that info in mind, should I still have the vet check her out? Or give it some more time to observe her?

The dentist happened to have an appointment this afternoon so I’m debating just going in case. They aren’t there over the weekend.

But Ciabatta HATES the carrier and traveling. I don’t want to scare her for nothing, not to mention the big price tag on vet visits.

        Thoughts?

          Does she eat hay?
How are her poop and urine looking?

I think you should go. It sounds like a dental issue.

Still eating her hay. Poop, pee and energy level are all normal. Also I should clarify I’m talking baby carrots.

I just spied her eating more pellets so now I wonder if she was just being picky…

Have you noticed any drooling, a wet mouth, or food falling out of her mouth? Those can all be signs of teeth problems, or a mouth problem such as an abscess. It’s good that her poop is normal, and her energy level. It sounds like she might have something going on with her teeth or mouth, so even though she is eating better now, it still might be a good idea to have her checked out. It doesn’t sound like it’s an emergency, since she is eating fairly normally and still pooping normally, so you could wait until the first of next week, if you would rather do so, but you certainly don’t want her to stop eating or only eat very little if she is having some problems or pain. It’s often hard to know what to do. We don’t want to rush our rabbits to the vet (which can be upsetting to them) before it’s necessary, but at the same time, it’s so important for rabbits to keep eating well and if something is preventing that, that needs to be remedied.

You didn’t say if the carrots are baby carrots or full sized ones. Carrots have a lot of sugar, and can be considered like a fruit, so they should be limited in a rabbit’s diet. Four carrots a day, even if they are baby ones, would be a lot. It would be better to give her no more than 1 or 2 baby carrots a day.
