        Hello all,

My bunny Ciabatta is a 2 year old neutered female dutch. I rescued her from the shelter about a year ago and she has been in great health since.

On Wednesday I noticed that she didn’t eat any of her carrots which she usually loves and barely any pellets. We use very healthy pellets so she was never big into them but usually ate a little bit at breakfast. She was all over the kale, parsley and hay though. Her poops and energy were normal. It was just hard foods and this continued into Thursday so I worried that maybe she had a dental issue. I also gave her a raisin and she ate it but then was shaking her head oddly for a few seconds.

Just in case I bought new carrots Thursday night in case something was wrong with them. And she eventually did eat two of the new ones. But not the full 4 which is her usual. She did eat a hard treat no problem. So she seems on the upswing.

The vet had an opening this afternoon – is it worth getting her checked out? Or was that just a random off day and now that shes being more normal I should just watch her for awhile? I’m torn. Part of me thinks might as well take a check but the other part knows she HATES getting in the carrier and traveling and it also costs a good $100 for a check up.

        Thoughts?

I may be mistaken, but it sounds like she’s getting a lot of sugar. 4 carrots is a lot for a bun, and sugar can cause gas and other tummy upset. Keep her on pellets, hay, and low-calcium, low-oxilates fresh leaves, and see if she perks up. (((feel better soon)))

Sorry, I should of clarified. She gets 4 baby carrots a day. It’s the little treat that goes with all the greens and hay which she is still eating.
I don’t think it’s her tummy as she is full of energy and her poop/pee is normal. I’m watching her eat her kale at the moment with a vengeance so now I wonder if she was just being picky…

Thank you for the get well wishes!

LOL I figured it was baby ones.
Just to give you an idea: a 6lb bun should be getting 1Tbsp of non-leafy veg per day – and only 1tsp of sugary food like fruit. Carrots fall i between those two, so 1 baby carrot per day would do if there’s no raisin involved

But some buns really are sensitive to certain hays, or pellets, or fresh foods. It’s why people recommend introducing new foods (especially to young buns) so gradually.
