Hi guys. I am worried because Daisy isn’t drinking very much water or eating much hay. She has never really done much of either, but ti’s starting to worry me about the water. She eats her veggies and pellets everyday, but the level of her water hardly ever moves. We have 2 water dishes in her cage, and we have also tried a water bottle. Neither have showed any difference in water intake. If there is something else I can do please let me know!

I agree with Benthebunny. Wash her vegetables thoroughly and feed them to her for extra water content. If this persists, please call your vet and see if they can help.

If a bunny eats a lot of veggies, they won’t drink much. In the summer when my buns get lots of fresh greens, their water-bowls go more or less untouched, I just change the water every day. In the winter when they eat more hay, they drink more water. Does her poop look good, does her pee seem very concentrated? Those are the things to make a note of.

You can wet her greens, that’s good. Hydration is of course important for a bunny, both for the tummy and the kidneys.

Have you considered giving her an unsweetened pedialyte?
It encourages drinking a bit more liquid.

My Georgie needed some at one point and I found she loved the taste. I was able to use up the rest by putting a splash in her water bowl each time I changed it.

I would supply more then one water bowl; one with pure water and the other half/half pedialyte/water so that she has options. It should also help you see if she has a preference.

When I want Chewie to get more hydration, I put his fresh leaves in a sink full of cold water for 5-10 minutes before serving them. They become more turgid (take in water) and while he thinks he’s getting crispier crunchier greens, he’s also getting more water from his sneaky mom.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I will try out soaking her veggies tonight!

When I had this problem, I added a few drops of organic non-sweetened pineapple juice to the water bowl. It did the trick, but it’s a method not to be abused because even if no extra sugars are added, fruit is pretty sugary on its own

Our experience is that if they eat a lot of veggies, they won’t be drinking much water. We also soak all their greens in water…the greens come from either the farmers market or the grocery store. The water soak plumps up the greens and also as a precaution gets rid of any pesticides on the greens. The farmers market stuff is usually “organic” so they shouldn’t have pesticides, but they do have noticeable sand that the water bath gets rid of. With big rabbits, its pretty easy to verify they’re getting enough water when you change their litter boxes….they have big bladders,
