Please help, I just took Charlie to the vet to get neutered… Well he’s a she and I got her spayed. She got the procedure done around noon and stayed at the vet for a few hours. They said I could pick her up around 5:30. I went to do so and was told she went poop and that she ate a few bites of kale, they gave her critical care and a dose of pain meds before sending me home with her and some pain meds for the next 4 days. We have been home since about 6 and she has not eaten anything and I do not believe she has drank any water either. I tried to hand feed her kale and she still wasn’t having it. She is also very shaky every now and again and idk if she is cold or just scared/in pain. She also is occasionally doing this abnormal teeth grinding , a lot louder than her normal, playful grinding. I know though that she is in pain and very uncomfortable because she will be lying down one second, then back up, then back down and closes her eyes, then back up with eyes wide open again, and she is also shakey occasionally as well. She just can not seem to get comfortable at all. I have 0.5 mg/ml of Metacam (meloxicam) and I was told to give her one dose of 1/2 ml per day. I do not want to give her more and overdo it. What do you guys think? She is also 4.61 lbs.

Keep her warm. Should start nibbling on food the next day.
          Call your vet for status.

Bunnies can get hypothermic when in pain. Do you have a hot water bottle you can wrap in a fleece or a towel and put near Charlie so she can snuggle up to it if she wants to?

Also, if she’s tooth grinding it means she’s in quite a lot of pain. I would split the dose recommended into two, and give the Metacam to her every 12 hours – 24 hours is a long time and it does wear off. A bun in pain will not eat or drink.

Then, I would offer her very wet fresh leaves (pick her favourite kinds) for hydration as well as fiber, and at first it’s ok to give her favourite treats as long as you get her eating.

You are the best person to gauge the situation, but if it continues like this, pop her back in to the vet’s office. Bettter safe than sorry…

I do hope some of this helps and please keep us posted. ((((((get well soon, Charlie))))))

How is she doing now? 0,5 ml meloxicam sounds too low för a 4,6 lb bunny. I’d say she needs double that dose, rabbits metabolize meloxicam much more effectively than dogs and cats. My 6 lb rabbit got 1,5 ml Metacam (0,5 mg/ml) /24 hours after a simple tooth burr, and a spay causes way more pain than a tooth burr of course.

Teeth grinding and shivering means she’s feeling lousy. As the other have said, keeping her warm is REALLY important, a bunny often gets hypothermic when it’s in pain and that means the whole system is shutting down. She must eat too. I hope she’s better now or you have to go back to the vet asap.

Sorry, Bam. My brain registered 1-2ml per day.

Bam’s right. 0.5ml per day is way too low for a nearly 5lb bun. Give her 1ml every 12 hours (I just Whatsapped my super bun-savvy vet to double check – she said it’s the minimum she’d prescribe after a spay for a bun that weight).

But honestly, I’d call the vet and explain and see what she says. Most vet offices are happy to do a quick phone consult in cases like this.

Thank you for checking, Q8! I know you have a super bunny-savvy vet!

And I absolutely agree about making a phone-call to the vets. If they want to see her they want to see her and if not, you’ll feel better for having asked.

Thank you so much for all the advice! I wrapped her in a warm towel and gave her a bit more metacam, I also mashed up some pellets in water and syringe fed her some of that. After that she started to drink some water and she ate a few peices of kale. I gave her plenty of towels to warm up to in her cage overnight and left some kale in there for her as well. She ended up eating most of it ? And she went pee a little in her litter box and some poops around her cage. She still seems a bit uncomfortable this morning, but not nearly like last night. She isn’t shaking or grinding her teeth. Thank you guys, I will be upping her Metacam dose slightly as you suggested. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
