My family just lost two buns on Easter of this year for unknown reasons. We made the decision to get two babies as our hearts are full of a lot of love to give these guys. We got a male and female and kept them in a very large area indoors side by side separated but they could see each other. The female was spayed two months ago. They did recently get together this weekend briefly. We knew once the boy was neutered this was likely to be an easy full bond as they locked each other daily through their divider, shared a stuffed animal daily back and forth, never ever showed sign of aggression and laid next to each other all day. They have done this daily for two months which doesn’t feel like forever but they’re both babies. Today we took the boy in to be neutered and two hours later the vet called and his heart stopped. My family is devastated. We had made the decision prior to this that these guys would be our last buns. What do I do now? I have a five month old female. Does she miss him horribly? Can she be happy alone? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I know a bonded pair is always ideal but I’m wondering how much this effects her since she couldn’t say goodbye and they never shared the actual same space.

Observe her behaviour, wether she seems lethargic or searching nervously or if her appetite changes, that way you’ll know if she’s grieving. Any way, comfort her and let her comfort you.

She can make it through, she’s very young still! She can also make it alone if you and your family spend plenty of time with her… Also If you and your family can consider it, in the near future you could search a shelter for an already neutered bun of about her age and arrange for a meeting to see if she’d like a new friend. If she is willing, you’ll save a little life, make her happy and enjoy your last pair of buns.
