        Hi,
I’m concerned one of my rabbits has snuffles. She’s been treat for a tear duct infection since we first got her (2 month ago). None of the drops we have given her have worked. She’s also sneezed ever since we got her but recently she’s started to make a strange noise sometimes which sounds like a pig snorting. I’m so scared she’s got respiratory problems. The vets have never treat her for snuffles – only for her eye so far. I’ve booked in to see the vet day after tomorrow because of these noises (which aren’t that regular but she still makes them) but I’m worried I’m leaving it too long should I ask for a culture and sensitivity test? I read this is a good idea. Could snuffles cause a treat duct infection though? Please could someone give me some help I’m ill with worry I can’t stop crying

Two days should not be too long. Try to calm down please. Is it sort of like a honking noise like this?

              The symptoms for pasteurellosis is
Watery nasal discharge followed by sneezing and then a thick translucent or yellow nasal discharge, mats on the inside of fore paws.
If you are very concerned try to get the appointment to tomorrow.

Oh, this is a very informative article. You mentioned snoring. It say in the article.

“These infected rabbits will often make a loud snuffling or snoring sound due to the fluid and mucous in their nasal tracts.”

Does that sound right? The full article is here:

Thanks for that I’ll read that now, all symptoms are the same for her except from the discharge on nose (None on paws either so hasn’t been wiped away). I’ll definitely get an appointment tomorrow instead. Think I’m just worrying, thanks so much again for the help

No problem. Just remember. Calm down, rabbits can pick up on stress and can get stressed with you. Trust me. I understand your anxiety, when I think something is wrong with my rabbit I will weep and sob and then everything turns out to be fine. But for pasteurellosis, itcould be fatal, but I think you caught it early enough because of no yellow discharge and no spreading. Hope your baby gets better. And remember. Stay calm!

My boy sometimes sounds like a pekingese dog sometimes, he has allergies to hay and a lot of things, so he has hay cookies from the store, his eyes run sometimes and his nose runs, but he’s fine, maybe there is some dust in the hay, when he makes the sound like Benthebunny said, stay calm, what I do is say. “Oh dear baby, that’s it you sneeze.” When he stops I say. “Ooh better now.” It is scary sometimes when you see it, but I got used to it and even get up in the night to talk to him, bunnies are like children and we do worry about our bunny children as bunny parents, it is normal, but try to stay calm, we see all kinds of things with indoor bunnies because they are near us all the time, outside bunnies we only see when we go out to them in the garden, so we do not see everything and what happens.

I can definitely sympathise as I went through the same stress when my adopted bunny started getting snuffly, not long after I’d lost my previous rabbit.

The best advice I can give is to make sure your vet knows enough about rabbits to treat her. When Bertie had snuffles symptoms I took him to my regular vet who prescribed broad spectrum antibiotics for a week. When this didn’t work I took him to a specialist who said a week’s treatment would never have been enough and most vets don’t have a clue about treating rabbits. We did a culture and found he had an infection guinea pigs normally have, and Bertie is now all better after the right antibiotics twice a day for a month.

But as your bun isn’t snotty yet it sounds like you’ve caught it early. So please don’t worry!
