I noticed today that my mini lop has some crusty hair near the far end of his eye (side closest to his ear). There’s just a tiny bit near one eye, and lots near the other. No other symptoms. I’m leaning towards taking him to the vet tomorrow just to be safe, but has anyone experienced anything like this? It seems odd to me that it is just on the far side of his eye, and there is nothing visibly wrong with the eye itself. Just some very crusty hair. I tried (with a little success) to gently massage and clean the area with a warm washcloth.

Is he a single bunny? Just wondered if another rabbit (or even a cat!) could be grooming his eye?
It might be where his eye has drained if there was a bit of something irritating it.

How are the tops of his paws looking? Sometimes this can clue us in. If they are a bit grotty, there might be eye or nasal discharge that he is cleaning away before you see it. If nasal, it’s possible some could be transfered to the eye area when he cleans his face.

Yes, he’s a single bunny – 3 years old and neutered. He has been going outside a lot during the day in the nice weather while I’m gardening, but he really doesn’t have access to any other animals. His paws look completely normal. While I was trying to clean next to his eyes we trimmed his nails and I didn’t notice anything. I hate to put him through the trauma and expense of a vet visit if it is nothing, but the idea of an eye infection also scares me. Maybe some pollen or something just irritated his eyes a bit though? I’m not sure.
