Hi there i just need some advice on bonding to make sure I’m doing it right! I have a 6 month old neautered boy bunny blue and after a lot of thought we decided to get him a friend! So on Saturday we go a 8 week old beautiful little girl called lilly. blue has a cage in the spare room that is always open but when we are out at work we shut the door to the bedroom and when we are home he has run of the whole flat except the bedroom. I was told to put lilly in his cage and let him have the bedroom and when we are there I out Lilly in a run in the lounge to stretch her paws!! They have had about 5 meets all been the same mostly blue ignoring her they do eat together touch noses etc so I lengthened the metro an hour. They had things to play with Lilly and blue were both in his box and they were fine. No grooming or anything happened so I was advised to run banana on Lilly head to encourage grooming. Blue soon sniffed this out licked it off but also started pawing at Lilly head! I stopped this and then it turned into a bit of a scuffel no fur was ripped out etc but were she is so small im worried the smallest thing may hurt her! I’m going to try again tonight but not for so long. Does this all sound normal? I just don’t want to ruin there bonding process by doing somehow g wrong. Any advice will be great! She will be getting spayed as soon as she’s old enough!

It is really best to have both rabbits spayed and neutered before you attempt bonding. That is always the first step in bonding. Since Lilly is still a baby, her hormones haven’t kicked in yet, and you may be able to bond her with your rabbit, but as soon as the hormones do come in, there could be aggression and fighting – and injuries. Even if you can bond them now, it will likely just be temporary and you may have problems as she reaches puberty. It would probably be better to keep them separate for now, although they can be in the same room, and then properly bond them after Lilly has had her surgery and recuperated.
