I have a male lionhead rabbit. When I researched this earlier it says it’s from too much calcium? I do not feed my bunny alfalfa anymore since he is no longer considered a baby. His diet consists of timothy hay, pellets, and romaine lettuce. I’ve also noticed that his stomach/tail also becomes yellow after he urinates. Could this be because he isn’t neutered?

Keep in mind that any comments will be pure speculation on our part since there’s no picture of the said urine, BUT I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Bunny pee does change both colour and thickness depending on which foods were eaten recently, and can range from yellows to oranges to reds to browns.

His stomach and tail are probably turning yellow because he’s sitting in it at some point, either in his litter tray or stepping in it if he’s going outside the tray. It’s not unusual to rabbit pee to be an assortment of colours. Since bringing my two home two weeks ago, I’ve had bright white pee, dark orange, yellowy milky pee, yellow pee etc. It’s natural for there to be some variation in colour so I wouldn’t worry about it.

The pee staining will go away with time, but perhaps either a different litter type may soak up the pee better, or a grid over the litter to prevent him laying in the damp litter?

Yellow urine isn’t an observandum. In fact, consistently clear urine with no chalky residue ever IS an observandum with rabbits. So you want to see some color and some chalkiness, because that’s a healthy bunny!

Yellow color doesn’t mean too much calcium. If you see gravel-like pee, ie pee that isn’t like pee at all but beige/gray and like fine wet concrete, that means bladder-sludge.

Here are two really good articles that you probably will feel better after reading:

As Azerane says, a litter box screen could be good if he gets pee on his tummy. Sometimes bunnies like to sit in their litter-box after having done their business, and some pee can get soaked up by the fur. Really fat rabbits can get pee and sticky poop on their tummies because they’re not capable of cleaning themselves very well, but your bun is young and probably not very fat.
