Oreo has been diagnosed as having a parasite not sure how to pronounce it but it started with a C.  She has been given Septrin Suspension Antibiotic of which she has 0.7ml twice a day.  Although Caramel seems fine the vet has told me to treat her with 0.4ml twice a day because they were together before i separated them yesterday.  The vet did not want to give them their injections today so they have to go back in a weeks time.  I also asked about them being spayed and she said when they were around 5 to 6 months.  I am still not sure how Oreo has got the parasites so need to read up on that. Although when i bought my rabbits i was told they had been wormed my vet has given me some Panacur  and asked me to worm them again.

Booo. Poor scrumptious cookie bun. I hope he shakes it off soon and that Caramel never got it in the first place.

            Thanks Q8Bunny

Me too she is so sweet and although i have only had her 6 days she loves to cuddle.  She is eating and drinking and once she tasted the antibiotic i actually think she liked it. But it does smell of banana.

I’m glad you took her in! I think the parasite is coccidia. It’s not uncommon in very young buns but often fatal unless vet care is provided asap. So good job!!!

This parasite is very common in rabbitries and she brought it with her from the breeder, and even if she had been dewormed, it wasn’t enough. The stress of getting a new home can have been the trigger -it doesn’t have to be bad stress, just the stress of a change in environment. The parasites got the opportunity to multiply and she got sick. Rabbits under the age of 4 months are very susceptible to this parasite. Here’s some rather detailed info:

I don,t know what else to do for her.  I am thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting her cage, changing her bedding and hay.  I wash her bottom several times a day because i am also worried about fly strike apart from trying to keep her clean.  I am worried she won’t survive.  Now i am having to syringe feed her antibiotics.so all this is going to stress her out more. None of the You tube videos give much hope of her surviving or mention using the antibiotic i have been given for her.  The only thing that i am grasping at is the fact that she is still eating, drinking and running around.  All my pets are adopted from shelters, this is the first time i have ever bought any pet.  I feel so guilty.

And eating, drinking and binkying is SO important Marie and if she eats the meds on her own because they taste of scrummy banana then that’s a BONUS.
Don’t listen to the youtubers. If I looked up ‘I have a tickly cough’ today I could find “sure death tomorrow” on the internet if I looked hard enough!

Listen to your vet and do as she says and you’ll be giving them the best chance they can have. And they didn’t have all the BB members’ Healing vibes did they ??!!!

How did the vet diagnose Oreo?

She felt her tummy and looked at her bottom and there was a slight watery poo but only very little. Before i took Oreo to the vets i checked her and she was dry.  She said that she was underweight, but she was thin when i got her  0.5g.  Yesterday i noticed some jelly substance that was a light brown in colour.  I was taking them to the vets today to have their vaccinations so i mentioned it to the vet and she said that we should get Oreo right first.

I lost my baby bunny Truffles to a parasite in its nervous system, about a month after I got it. I hope it is not the same one!

I am so sorry for your loss. I don’t care how long they are with you for even if only a few hours it is heartbreaking to loose them.  I fell in love with both my bunnies the moment i saw them and just had to bring them home.  They are bonding with me so quickly, Oreo even takes her food from my hand.  I will be devastated  if i loose her.

ReeseBun, the parasite your Truffles had was another one, e cuniculi. It affects the nervous system more than the GI tract.

Marie, your Oreo seems to have got ciccidiosis in a mild-ish form. The really bad cases get ample, liquid diarrhea with mucus in it, they become very very weak and won’t eat or drink and they certainly don’t binky.
You got Oreo to the vet in good time and now she’s getting the best care, the appropriate meds, she has a loving home and her sister is there – those things are so important. What happens from now on is not in your hands. We can only ever try to do our best.
Don’t feel guilty. You have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about.

This was the bunny with the mucus poop? Oh, I’m so glad you got a diagnosis. I was suspecting it was something like this.
