Some of you may remember me.. I created a topic about a month ago. First time bunny owner, my kids had rescued it from some abusive kids outdoors. Well, she settled in good, loveable, sweet, we weren’t even sure if she was male or female, till yesterday when we woke up to find 6 babies. Didn’t even know she was pregnant. They’re all doing good in the upper level of her condo but they’re just there, in the corner on her nest she made. Do I need to move them into a little box or let them be?

Oops How sweet. I think there’s a topic in here for “whoops litters”. I hope you gave the unsexed bunny a girly name !!

My gut would say let nature take its course. If they seem fine up in her nest, then so be it. Just keep an eye that she’s feeding them from time to time.
(And give her plenty to eat and drink of course )

              Aw cute names!
              Big surprise!

They are probably ok for the time being but will wriggle around, so check they’re all in the nest couple times a day. When they’re getting more mobile, a box would be a good idea.

There is some really good info in these 2 article. I hope that helps. Sorry to rush (on a break at work).

Firstly Mummy is going to need lots of extra food. Unlimited everything. Babies need to be warm so make sure they aren’t exposed to drafts or frost. Make sure they have fat tummies in the mornings and aren’t looking thin and wrinkled. Leave the nest undisturbed for now as long as they are covered with mum fur and nesting materials. You will need to baby proof the hutch. If it has open gaps even an inch wide they can wriggle out and get lost or cold. Mums only feed once or twice a day so as long as tummies are fat don’t be concerned if she ignores them during the day. Check the nest for any dead babies or detritus otherwise leave it be.

There’s 3 more white buns and a brown bun not in the signature. All rescue’s 3 are permanent residents and one is up for adoption.

One more question.. The babies are kind of covered sometimes by the fur mama bun pulled. Is that okay or can they suffocate?

Oh, Laura. I’m sorry. It can happen. Foo Foo could have been a young mom, or baby buns are sometimes plagued by parasites… How’s the surviving kit looking?

Looking ok so far. It had the most weight out of all 6..idk what happened. Mama had been kind of crazy after having them. Constantly nesting the area, flinging things, scratching and stuff. =( Maybe she just couldn’t take care of 6 of them.

Oh so sad. Hard to see, I know.
Re your question about the nest, it’s okay that they were covered in fur. In the wild, the rabbits dig a shallow burrow, build nests in there and even cover it with debris and soil after they’ve visited for feeding.

I’m sure you are keep an eye on the remaining kit. You may have to assist feeding by holding it under the mama if you suspect she is not coming to feed it.

ETA: Give her some more nesting materials if she is feeling the need to nest. Perhaps then she will leave the current nest as is. I don’t know if that is normal agitation for a mama rabbits. Perhaps someone else will.

I hate to say it, but I hope she is not carrying a second litter. It is possible but I havent heard of it happeneing very often.

I’m so very sorry to hear it. Sadly it’s not very uncommon with a bun’s first litter.
Thank you for doing all that could be done for them. How is mama bun doing now?
