I am very worried about my 8 week old doe. Her pee has been very dark for the past few days. It started happening a few days after I completely weened her from milk. She has been eating alfalfa hey, juvenile rabbit Timothy pellets, carrot tops, garden lettuce, and baby carrots. Is it probably just the change in her diet? :/

Dark? As in orange? Orange-ish pee is the result of plant pigments.

If you give rabbits carrots to eat, their pee will be orange!!!  When we first brought Bunny home, she was a rescue rabbit from a local park, we had nothing to feed her except carrots.  We put her in a big plastic laundry box and gave her carrots.  The next morning she pee’d and her pee was orange!!  I didn’t understand why someone would abandon such a nice bunny, but when I saw her orange pee I thought she was abandoned because she had kidney problems!  Anyhow, she didn’t have kidney problems. Her orange pee was due to the carrots.  Bunny quickly transitioned from living in laundry box (one night) to living for 11 years as a free ranging house bunny in our house.  Her home was our (oops!!  her ) bedroom and sleeping under the bed.

Oh good! I was really worried. Her brothers pee isn’t dark so maybe he’s just…. eating less carrots. Lol if I give them too big of a variety of veggies they get the runs so I’m trying to get them used to a few select foods and work their way up to different things. Right now I’m giving them carrots, carrot tops and garden romaine lettuce.

Certain dark leafy greens contain carotene as well. Just something to keep in mind as you introduce new foods. A few veggies are okay now, but real introductions shouldn’t take place until they are at least 12 weeks. Young tummies have to become fully developed first.
