        Hi

Can anyone give me advice on my rabbits diet.  I have 2 rabbits both 10 wks old, i feed them Burgess Junior and Dwarf Pellets with Mint and keep their dish full.  They also have Oxbow Alfalfa Hay and Meadow Hay in constant supply along with fresh water.  I do not give any veg or fruit or any treats.  I was advised to change their pellets to adult pellets when they are 12 wks old.

        Any advise would be great.

        Thanks

        Marie

That diet sounds perfect for ten week old buns. You are right you dont want to introduce veg till 12 weeks and even then only one thing at a time in small amounts. You will also want to start moving them to adult pellets and away from alfalfa hay around the same time as well as reducing the amount of pellets. Do you keep them separate? If not you might want to think about separating them until they can be spayed/neutered soon too.

Feel free to ask any more questions you have, I had a baby bun from six weeks old who is now two and plenty of members here have experience with young buns. Also we love pictures here!

            Hi Kirstyol

Thanks for your reply.  They are going to the vets tomorrow for their injections and i was going to speak to the vet about having them neutered.  Any advice as to what you think would be great.  Thanks.

Let us know how you get on at the vets. It is notoriously difficult to accurately sex bunnies, especially ones as young as yours. We were convinced Bramble was a girl until he was almost 20 weeks old. You don’t want to take the chance of an accidental litter (which is actually how we got Bramble in the first place) and buns can get pregnant very young, if you have two same sex buns they will start to fight if left unaltered so best to separate them until their spay/neuter and recovery time is over.

When it comes to changing their food at 12 weeks you will want to mix the old and new food together and phase out the old food, then work on reducing the amount in line with their weight and the addition of veggies. Start with one veg at a time and only small amounts, you can increase the amount a little each day and add a new veg every few days as long as there is no tummy trouble. There are plenty of posts on here about rabbit safe veggies, I am quite lazy and buy bagged salad for my two I just have to watch what it contains and I top it up with a few other bits and bobs.

                Thanks Kirstyol

I am going to separate them the last thing i want is for either of them to get pregnant.  It,s also funny Caramel is twice the size of Oreo when they are laid side by side Caramels head and body is huge compared to Oreo it makes me wonder if Caramel is only 10 weeks old. But not knowing for sure i will have to stick to their diet for another week or so.

They could just be different breeds, rabbits vary in size massively by breed. I would definitely stick with it for another two weeks. Very few people know the exact date of birth of their buns anyway so its not an exact science a few days extra on the baby diet wont hurt them

                    Thanks

My opinion is that they are old enough for green leafy vegetables.  Certainly treats are in order…in moderation.  Banana slices from a banana with green traces in its skin,  apple slices.  Our bunnies insist on Fuji apples!!  They are very attracted to treats.  It’s a good way to socialize your rabbit.
