My 1 year old fuzzy lop has always had a lot of trouble keeping her feet and hindquarters clean. She often pees on herself and gets fur mats. I noticed recently a bald spot on her hip and was worried about mites but there was no flaking and baby hair has started to grow in so I thought it was part of her shed. This morning I noticed a large bald spot on her foot but this time accompanied by flakes that seem to be mostly in that region. The hair falls out quite easily. Could this be mites or could it also be a result of her poor cleaning habits? The fur on the foot was matted and when I was trying to groom her I noticed the hair falling out. I am planning on taking her to the vet in a few days but am wondering what this could be and what to do in the mean time? Also is it dangerous that part of her foot skin is exposed? It’s on the outside edge near the back of her foot.

Hi there, I’m not sure about the reasons behind the shedding but I would imagine its quite painful for her as the fur is there to protect her feet. Try and ensure she has soft things to walk on, fleeces or soft carpet, until you can get her checked by the vet. And also, try to find out if there’s a reason that she is peeing on herself and not being able to clean herself….

Luckily it is the side of her foot so the base of her foot is still protected!! I will try to keep as much hair as I can attached until I get her to the vet!
