What are the symptoms of mega colon? My rabbit has oval shaped poops and he is gritting his teeth.

If your rabbit has not been injured in some way, it could be gas pain that’s causing him to grind his teeth. Have you tried giving him some (1-3ml/cc) pediatric simethicone (gas drops)? It often does the trick after as few as one but sometimes a few doses spaced 1-3 hours apart (you can’t really give him too much of it).

Is you bun eating and pooping despite acting strange? If not for 12+ hours, vet trip please.

As for megacolon, other members have had experience with it in their buns, but oval poops are not always a sure sign.

Megacolon is often associated with the broken gene. It often becomes apparent when they are very young. The symptoms you describe in your other thread do not sound like megacolon. The small poops and then larger poops are simply signs of GI problems. Not all GI problems are megacolon. It’s much more likely that your bunny has gas, but you need to monitor him to make sure he doesn’t develop stasis. He’s eating and pooping right now, so that’s good. Like I said in your other thread, belly massages and simethicone may help. If he doesn’t improve after 12 hours, hasn’t been eating or pooping, then it’s time to see the vet.

Here’s an article on MediRabbit about poop:

To me, it sounds like bun has a bout of gas. In your other thread, you said he was pooping. That’s really great! Baby gas drops often help with gas. They can be bought in many places like drugstores or Walmart or Tesco if you are in the UK.

Small poop, oddly shaped poop and tooth-grinding means tummy trouble, and many bunnies go through that when they molt. The important thing is that you make him move around, see to it that he eats – if he likes romaine, you can serve the leaves dripping wet so he gets water in him. Parsley, cilantro, mint and sometimes basil are also often appreciated. If the teeth-grinding goes on for more than 8 hours, I’d call a vet. They can give a painkiller and sub-cutaneous fluids. Gas is painful for rabbits and must come out.

Megacolon is sth very different, and honestly not something you need to worry about now. It’s a genetic disease and a lot rarer than gas pain/gut slowdown. It’s sth a vet would perhaps consider if a bun has frequent episodes of tummy problems and the poop looks like cow piles (it is also known as cow-pile syndrome). As LBJ also says, it’s primarily seen in rabbits with white fur and dark spots, because the gene causing it also gives rise to that color-pattern.
