        Hi every bun!

I’ve had one of my bunnies for over 2yrs now. Over the past couple months he has developed a funny behaviour of chewing air(?) when I hold him. Only when he is held he chews.. nothing. In the beginning he used to absolutely hate being held where he would always bite my shoulder within a second. Now, he makes the chewing noises, then if I hold him for too long then he gets irritated and bites my shoulder.

It’s definitely not teeth grinding. My understanding is he’s trying to mimic how humans talk haha. And I’m not believing it is an act of being ‘content with life’. Sometimes I’ll hold him up in the air (like Simba in The Lion King), and he chews.

Anybody else’s bunny do this? Or can anybody understand what this means?

        Thanks

Could it be how he is showing some agitation? Where do you place your hands when you hold him?
Since this is a new behaviour, I’d have some concerns that it could be health related. If there is pressure on his chest that prevents him breathing properly, it’s possible this chewing action is him trying to mouth breathe. Rabbits are not good at this, they need to breath through the nose.

Thanks for replying. I don’t think I’m putting any pressure on his chest. When I hold him I place one hand under his arms and the other hand supporting his bottom, but I don’t do that for long. He also chews when he is placed on my chest/shoulder area so my body is supporting him and his head is over my shoulder, so there’s no pressure there.
