My 4 year old mini lop, butterscotch, almost died last weekend from gastroperisis (gut stasis) and after discussing with my vet I gave her sub q fluids, Iv reglan, miralax, and gas x holding vigilance all day and night. It worked and within 24 hours she was on the mend with normal looking poops eventually. Things have been great and she loves kale which is new for her, drinking lots of water, eating lots of Timothy. I have cut back a bit on Timothy crunchies since her event. She got a few carrot shreds last night and today she has soft poop (large sticky smelly poop). She is acting fine and seems in great health. What now? I have read a lot of forums and wonder if this is just gut flora adjusting (but why a week later?), is this too much kale (about 1 bowel a day), the cantaloupe? The carrot shreds last night? Not enough timothy crunchies? I really don’t want to do meds…. I don’t want to go thru what I went thru last weekend! In the past she never really had issues with this. Tks…

Please check out the Bunny Info tab at the top of this page – it has a great guide to recommended bunny diet/food.

A bun’s diet should consist primarily (at least 75%) grass hay. Fruit/treats should be the size of your tumbnail once a day (I would say once a week!). It sounds to me like Butterscotch is getting way too much sugar (which may explain the sticky poo) – especially after a stasis episode.

So try hay and water only, with wet fresh green leaves that you know she has tolerated well in the past. Cut out everything else until she’s gone for at least a couple of weeks with perfect eating and perfect poos.

It can take a long time for a bun’s GI system to recover fully from a stasis episode.

I would cut out the canteloupe and carrot, and all other fruits – permanently. A bunny witha sensitive tummy will get repeat stasis episodes. Sugar is bad. Some bunnies handle it worse than other’s. Stick to hey, pellets, water, and then greens. If he won’t eat pellets, try greens. Last week, one of my buns was on metacam which made him stop eating. He will get stasis if he eats fruit. So when he stopped eating/pooping, I syringe fed him critical care and benebac. Then he started eating greens, and a few days later, pellets. He is stil recovering. It takes a while. Cut out the sugar.
