        Hi everyone,

I am just concerned about the use of rear guard on my bun to protect from fly strike.  My bunny lives in the house but as he had a bout of stasis a couple of weeks ago, although we keep his bum clean, there is a slight smell sometimes. As I said he is a house bun but no matter how much you try there would still be a fly or two gets into the house.  As soon as I catch them and turn round there are more, they are house flies though not blue or green bottles, I never see them in the house.  I have searched this forum and see that some people have commented on rear guard having killed some buns?  I found this product which says it can reduce the risk of fly strike and can be sprayed on the bun directly https://fetch.co.uk/supreme-tiny-fr…5011

Any views on this, I live in Ireland but actually at the moment the temperatures are pretty high.

        Many thanks xx

Rearguard has cyromazine. It can have side-effects according to a webbinar from the Rabbitvet (vet John Chitty) that I listened to in June 2016. They actually showed the Rearguard bottle in the webbinar. It’s often recommended for rabbits by rabbit-people, but I don’t know anything about lethality.

Anyway, vet John Chitty said you shouldn’t rely 100% on sprays and spot ons but be very careful about environmental hygien (change litter often etc) and check your bun’s rear daily. For a rabbit kept outside he recommended checking 3 times/day during hottest season, because flystrike can develop in as little as 6 hours when conditions are favorable. Your bun is inside, so checking once a day should do.

I can’t find an ingredience-list for the Tiny Farm Friends Keep It Clean. It says it’s safe, but I’d like to know what’s in it.

Thank you for your reply.. I have decided to give the rear guard a miss, do not want to risk it after him being so sick with stasis a couple of weeks ago.

I bought the tiny friends farm cleaner and there were no ingredients on it but managed to find the contents online…

            <5% non-ionic surfactants, disinfectant, perfume

            Coumarin, Linalool, Limonene, Geraniol

            Thanks
