A few weeks ago, I’ve rescued a new (female) bunny. I have a bonded male and female already, who are both 10 months old. The rescue is around 3 months old and still quite small. All are neutered.

I have tried to start the bonding process several times, but every time my oldest female Poof tries to mount the new bunny – which is fine – except for the fact that the new girl isn’t having ANY of it and a huge fight erupts every time Poof initiates a mounting. Things are going OK up until that point. The first time I tried in the bath tub, and the second time in the small WC room in our new house, which none of the buns have been in before so it was a neutral area.

Any tips for how I can get around this? I haven’t tried stress bonding before – is that something that could potentially work? Their cages are currently next to each other and they’re fine living side by side, it’s when they’re put together things go totally wrong.

I know some people don’t believe you should get involved when the rabbits are bonding but I found that stroking the nose of the bunny who is being mounted can help calm them down and lets the other bun believe they have got the better of mounted bunny

Stress bonding is always worth a shot, you will need to have someone drive you around whilst you sit in the back of the car with the bunnies to enable you to break up any fights should they happen. I haven’t used any other stress bonding techniques so I cant really comment further but good luck

If mounting always causes fights, remove mounting as soon as it starts. The one trying to prove dominance will start to look for other ways to to prove it, rather than resulting to mounting. You should be removing mounting after 5 to 10 seconds anyway, to avoid overly stressing out either rabbit and to help avoid fights

Its likely the new bunny doesnt want to be submissive to him as well, which means you will have a lot of fights to come until one of them bows down to the other, so to speak
