I buy hay from the local feed store by the bale-it’s great quality and the buns love it.

We don’t have Timothy hay here unless you want to pay an arm and a leg for it

I also buy hay from my local feed store, I can check the quality of each batch and get a whole bale for about $12

I give my bunnies American Pet Diner Timothy Gold (a second cutting), Drs. Foster & Smith Signature Western Timothy, and Oxbow Botanical Hay, which is timothy with herbs mixed in. I also give them Oxbow Orchard Grass.

I give mine a locally produced mixed hay that is rather soft and leafy, I also give Oxbow Oat Hay, Burn’s Green Oat Hay and Oxbow Orchard. I try to avoid timothy (there is some in the mix though) because it gives me an allergic cough and one of my buns is living in my bedroom, so obviously, my bedroom is pretty full of hay.

The most important thing with hay is that it smells good. It should have a pleasant smell, never any hint of mold. The next most important thing is that your bunny actually eats it. It doesn’t really matter what type of grass hay you feed, they are all pretty much equal in nutritional content, but your bun must eat it for it to do any good. (Kind of obvious perhaps, but buns can be incredibly picky with hay).

hmm.. I don’t feed timothy hay not that I don’t want to its just I can’t get a hold of it anywhere in nsw. I’d have to pay more shipping than the price of the hay.

You don’t have to use timothy at all. You should not use alfalfa or clover with an adult bun, but there are many grass hays that are suitable. Here’s a nautritional value-chart for hay: hay chart

Timothy is often mentioned because it is good grass hay and readily available in large parts of the Northern hemisphere. But as we all know, buns thrive in Australia, so they obviously don’t have any unconditional need for timothy hay.

I use Kaytee brand – it’s the most readily available for me. Occasionally I will add another type of hay from a different brand, though somewhat less often.

I’m currently spending a small fortune on Oxbow Orchard Grass. My buns love it.
