I’m adopting my rabbit on Friday afternoon. Her cage is all set up and ready for her arrival. I got a call yesterday from the shelter informing me that that is when Petunia (my rabbit) will be ready, BUT they were “sorry to inform me” that they don’t fix rabbits anymore. I’m pretty upset because it clearly said on there website that “All animals will be spayed/neutered before leaving the shelter.” And the lady I was visiting the rabbits with also said that they do this! Anyways, I am going to ask them what vet they recommend is the best and safest for the surgery and bring her myself. I don’t know how soon I can do this, but I will try to get her spayed asap. Until then, are there any tips about litter training unspayed rabbits? She’s 3 years old and was very sweet at the shelter but I know she’s going to mark her territory and be harder to train when she comes home. I’m also using a fleece over carpet for her flooring, but I’m not sure if that’s such a great idea anymore because I’ll have to wash it everyday almost. I’m so mad at the shelter for saying they would spay!!! I’m adopting from the spca by the way. So yeah, any tips on how to do this would be helpful! Thanks

It’s great that you are adopting a rabbit from a shelter! Some shelters spay and neuter rabbits, but others don’t. That was wrong of them to be misleading, though. It could be that the current shelter vet is not rabbit savvy, and only performs surgery on dogs and cats. If the shelter can’t give you any recommendations, you could list your general area and we might be able to help you find a good vet. You will need a good, rabbit savvy vet for your bunny anyway.

It’s certainly easier to litter box train a rabbit who is spayed or neutered, but you might still have good luck with Petunia even though she isn’t spayed yet. Put any poops you find in her litter box and if she pees elsewhere and you can soak some up with a paper towel, put that in the litter box too. Many people put their rabbit’s hay in the litter box to entice them to go in.
