My older rabbit gave birth a while back to five buns and they were all perfectly healthy. One of them was smaller than everyone else but was fine and lively like the others. While I was at work, my husband called and said there was something wrong with the smaller baby buns front paw and that it seemed like it was broken. He would try to move but stumbled and flopped over a lot. He passed away as my husband petted him to sleep. He called the vets before he called me about it and no one could do anything since the bun was still so young. When I got home I found something strange around the buns nose? It was yellow? I’ll attach a picture.
I don’t know what happened and if you could help me figure out what happened to avoid this from happening again, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.
If it helps, he was fed with the other baby buns everyday by his mother and I fed them alfalfa hay as well. That was their only diet.
I’ve lost another rabbit recently due to GI Stasis and losing another bun in the same month is so depressing aa

It is very difficult to say what exactly happened to the little one. I’m very sorry you lost him.

His small size is a clue that something wasn’t right from the start, though. Sometimes a “runt” can thrive, but often there is something wrong internally that prevents it from thriving. It can be just about any type of congenital abnormality, like malformation of one or several inner organs or a problem with absorption of nutrients or the immune system that isn’t developing like it should. If a bun’s immune defense is very weak, it can’t fight off pathogens that are always and normally around in the environment. The littlest thing can kill it.

There’s nothing really you can do about it if a bun is born with a severe defect that prevents it from thriving. That the other kits are alive and well signifies that you and mama bun are doing things right.

I don’t know if this was an oops litter, but just to be clear: The BB forum don’t allow discussions on intentional breeding. There are other forums better suited if you want to discuss intentional breeding and breeding-problems, f ex Rabbits Online Rabbits Online

They have members that are much more experienced with breeding-questions than most of us are here.

Thank you. No, it wasn’t intentional breeding. But thank you again.

I’m sorry for your recent losses. It is particularly hard to see a baby rabbit go.
What age was the little one?

About two to three weeks old or so.
I’ve just lost another baby rabbit today suddenly. He was perfectly heathy until just a few minutes ago he started to squeak very loudly and was laying on his side unable to move. I picked him up to get a better look and he passed away. It looks like there was a thick green snot or something in his nose so now I’m afraid that whatever is happening to my buns, it’s contagious. I don’t want to lose another bun but at this point I don’t know what to do
I have three baby rabbits left out of five and two adults one neutered
It can’t be the alfalfa hay, right? They’re still getting fed by their mother as well
                No pellets

Oh this is sad. Im very sorry.

There might be a bacterial infection of some sort. You might have to see if vet will prescribe some antibiotics.

I’ve heard of cottontail kits doing okay on ciprofloxacin before (same family of meds as baytril). Most vets prescribe baytril as its licensed for use in rabbits.

                  I wouldn’t think it is the alfalfa…

They only other thing I can think is they are getting the milk too fast and aspirating some. Then developing aspiration pnuemonia perhaps. It might be an idea to call some local breeders and ask their opinion. They may have some things they do that help if they see similar symptoms in a litter.

I don’t know if you have since gone to the vets or not but I just recently had a rabbit pass from pneumonia… That can cause a difficulty to breath from fluid around the lungs (may be why they were squeaking) and can also cause swelling or abscesses which could have been the cause for the paw, since that tends to be painful. Also there is a chance for the snuffles. I’d recommend you read up about that. Both of those seem like probable causes from the snot and yellow around the nose. I would recommend if anything you at least get the older rabbit to the vet to be looked at if no one will see the babies however I would push for them to be seen too.
Sometimes as with the case of my poor girl the bunny hides the pain and symptoms so well that you don’t notice until it’s too late.
I hope I could have been some kind of help…

                      Hello, it’s been around a week since what has happened and good news! Everyone seems to be doing fine and they all seem very healthy. No problems so far, thankfully. I’m still not sure what has happened but at least I haven’t lost anymore buns. ;;

Thank you all for your help and support.

Today I’ve lost another baby bun but she didn’t seem sick this time. Her back legs were splayed out away from each other and her front paws were in the normal position of a bun who has passed away. I think the mother bun somehow broke her baby buns legs while baby bun was trying to get milk? Sadly, I was busy cleaning the kitchen while the rabbits were in their own room and I didn’t think something like this could have happened. Rest in peace, Melon.

Oh you poor thing. How heartbreaking. ***Binky free Melon***

What age are they now? Maybe you’ll need to have the kits away from the mum for the most part, and put them with her a couple times a day while you supervise. I normally wouldn’t recommend separation but if they are at risk, perhaps it is for the best? Has the mother been getting unlimited food at the moment?

There are some nutitional deficiencies that can cause weak muscles or some paralysis but that doesn’t really explain the yellow or green around the nose you saw in the first 2 kits.

Are you able to try attach the photo again? The link in your first post didn’t work.

The mom is getting unlimited hay

Today I looked at the other two baby buns noses and they too have the yellow/green tint ?? But no discharge. Maybe it’s just the hay causing the tint? Since the alfalfa hay is pretty fine and leafy.

Okay, I put the babies in their own separate home and the mom is much more relaxed now. I was thinking of buying kmr to feed the babies since I’m scared something will happen again. The mothers nipples are really swollen too? Other than that, she seems normal..

                                  Oh, sorry
I deleted the photo because I saddened by it. I’ll post it again

Edit: they were born June 18.
