I’m hoping this is just due to her losing weight in a healthy way but I got Bunita a week ago. she’s a 6 month old flemish giant and seemed extremely overweight. Her dewlap was pretty big and just her whole body was really round. Today she got spayed and when I brought her home I only now noticed how saggy her dewlap suddenly is. I don’t know if I just didn’t realize it or if something weird happened. They said the surgery went really smoothly and nothing is wrong.

Would her dewlap be the first part to start losing fat? It looks like a little baseball is dangling off her throat now and it used to be tight and firm. There’s no real lump to feel though.?

Dewlaps are to an extent hormonally dependent. It’s fertile does that have dewlaps – and really fat rabbits of course, both de-sexed boys and girls can get rings of fat around their necks.

It does seem a bit too soon for the spay to take effect though. A spay of course stops production of sex-hormones, but there are always some left in the system that breaks down slowly after de-sexing. This is why you often see mood-swings in newly de-sexed rabbits.

Is she eating, drinking and pooping?

I don’t know if the dewlap would be the first to go, it makes sense that it would though since it’s a bit of a spare battery, a reservoir of fat that can be recruited when the need for energy is greater (as it is when a bun is pregnant or nursing babies). A mama bun also needs it to pull fur from when she’s nesting.

I woke up this morning to find pee and poop in her litterbox which was good, but she seems to still only be eating minimally. I honestly haven’t seen her drink and her water bottle doesn’t look like it’s emptying but she’s still peeing so maybe I’m just crazy.

It seems quite a bit firmer already today!

                That’s good!

She was probably given sub Q fluids at the vets, that’s standard procedure. That explains why you’ve not seen her drink but you’ve seen pee. Poop is a good find post op! Now you just need to get her to eat. Fragrant herbs like cilantro, parsley or mint are often appreciated. Whatever she eats now is fine – piece of fruit or favorite treat, anything to help her perk up. Did you get a painkiller for her? Since it’s a big op, the bun often feels rather lousy after and a painkiller can really help with appetite. Metacam is recommended. You’ll probably need to give it to her for several days.

Vienna, Zou’s dewlap is beautiful. Has it changed at all after the spay?

                      Ermmm, no not noticeably.
It’s magic, when she is sitting up or periscoping you don’t notice it, and then when she lays down in a certain way it suddenly appears in humungous glory… actually I’ve just skipped to check photos that I have from last August and a I have a very clear periscoping one and a very clear laying down one. I’ll try to take identical poses now and compare…. though to be fair I’m not sure I’ve seen her periscope recently….

She seems to have her appetite back, and her dewlap is “firming” up again a bit but still has shrunk significantly. She was very fat when I got her just over a week ago, I don’t think it’s because she overeats because her appetite hasn’t seemed big at all since I got her, which I wasn’t expecting. She just didn’t have any room to hop about so the exercise is probably doing some pretty weird things to her body

So, here are the comparison photos between Aug last year (at 1yr 4 mnths – not spayed) and today (2 yrs 2 mnths – spayed one month ago)

As you can see – the experiment proves that side-on profiles are more flattering the older one gets !!!

Actually doesn’t look the same rabbit does she!! And in Aug 2015 it looks like she had her full winter coat on !!

In the periscope pic, the dewlap looks smaller today, but in the laying down pic it looks twice as big !!!

Her feet seem to have shrunk in size too…..

Rather inconclusive, but how majestic she does look! I just want to kiss that forehead.

I do – lots and lots….. and my face literally gets lost in her ears….

It almost looks like an in-flight neck-pillow – back to front but the right way around – I’ve always wondered why the pillow gets blown up behind the neck too….. its reeeeally uncomfortable and your head drops down forward anyway !!!! Clever bunny !!
