        Hello.

My Stella is three years old and I would like to get her spayed She is extremely hormonal and has false pregnancies often. I do realize I should have gotten her spayed when she was younger, but it hasn’t been possible money- wise until now. The vet clinic I have contacted specializes in small animals and exotics and assures me that fixing rabbits is done routinely, and that they take all precautions when operating on a small animal. They have told me that a consultation and physical is required before booking the procedure, and that I will be given pain medications for Stella post op. They also mentioned that she will be given i.v. fluids all throughout the procedure.

So all that being said, I am terrified of something going wrong. I would feel awful if she didn’t make it through the surgery…I love her very much. I don’t want her lifespan shortened by a disease which is preventable (cancer). Can anyone offer me some advice or reassurance?

If you have a vet that specialized in small animals and exotics and they know to give you pain meds, that alone would be something I’d consider reassuring. Our vet is also a specialist and, while spays are more invasive surgeries than neuters, was fairly confident about the spay and had said that usually if something does go wrong it’s because of a pre-existing condition. As long as Stella had a clean bill of health or a good blood test earlier, she should be fine ^^.

Just make sure you limit her for 5 days after, keep an eye on her stitches, and for the first day or two give her a blanket and something warm (like a heat pack or a water bottle in a pillow case) since she’ll likely be cold.

Thank you so much for replying. Do you know if her age will complicate things at all? The vet clinic said no but I want to be sure.
