My little bun Ash has a small jaw abscess. It affects her little, she doesn’t scratch it, she continues to eat, hops around, just generally go’s on her merry way. She binkies almost constantly, she’s simply so jolly you wouldn’t be able to tell she had any medical issues at all. I spoke to the vet about it, and she has an appointment tomorrow morning, but I’m slightly confused. Her abscess SHRUNK ON ITS OWN. I’m not sure if that’s a sign of improvement, or if sepsis set in. Originally, it doubled in size for about 3 days. After 2 more days of delayed growth, the skin decomposed and she scratched it off unharmed. Is this a sign of bad goings-on, or I needn’t worry?

If a bunny has sepsis, it would be very, very acutely ill.

Has the abscess emptied through the scratched off skin perhaps? You should still see the vet, get her antibiotics and have the remainder of the abscess cleaned out, because bunny abscesses generally drain incompletely if at all – they have very thick pus.

It hasn’t emptied on its own at all, it’s just…fell off! We’re just heading to the vet at the moment, so hopefully she can be cured completely and won’t have any recurrences. By your explanation, she’s as far from sepsis as ever! I hope she does better though.
