Hi everybody!! I’ve only just joined this site so I’m pretty new to all of this..

But I just wanted some advice about my current situation!

So I have the most beautiful 4 month old mini lop female rabbit, Dandelion. She has the sweetest temperament (lots of bunny kisses, really friendly, binkies a lot etc etc) but she is a single bun and although she is a happy rabbit I know it is in her best interest to get her a friend.

She has recently been spayed, so that it would be easier to bond her. Originally I was going to go to the RSPCA and take her with me to choose a friend, as I know that all the rabbits there are also spayed and neutered.

HOWEVER, I recently came to hear of a friend of a friend’s situation; they were gifted a rabbit that they did not want by their now ex-fiancee and it lives by itself in a very small cage in the kitchen getting no attention at all and is very unhappy. I know that I would be able to give this bunny all the love in the world and it would have the run of my flat and have toys, cuddles.. and the companionship of my lovely Dandelion!

But Alas, this 6 month old rabbit is not neutered. I would get him neutered almost immediately if he were to be in my care.. my plan would be to get another spacious pen and keep him in there next to the pen that Dandelion sleeps in, so that they can get used to each other. I would not let them mix until he has recovered completely from his procedure (I know that he would probably try to mount her and this would result in stress from both parties). After some time, I would gradually introduce them in a supervised environment until I see it that they are compatible.

Does this sound like a plausible idea??

I really, really want to give this rabbit a better life!

        Any advice welcome!

        Thank you

        Alice x

I think that plan sounds pretty good. Just make sure you wait four to eight weeks after getting the male neutered. It takes usually about a month for all of the hormones to leave, but can sometimes take a bit longer. How long ago was Dandelion spayed? You’ll want to make sure that you’ve given her plenty of time to heal before introducing them as well. Also you’ll want to start in a neutral area when you start bonding. So if you let Dandelion free roam all day or for a few hours a day, try to block off one room from her. That way it won’t smell like either rabbit. You can also swap their items out so they can get used to each other. So one day Dandelion gets a specific food bowl and the male gets his own, then the next day you can swap them. You can swap toys, bowls, ect. I hope that the bonding goes well for you when you do start it. ^.^

Thank you so much! We’ve already started swapping some of their things, and they’ve started touching noses through the bars of their pens so hopefully that is a good sign! Still got to wait for Dandelion to recover properly but hopefully it will go well when we introduce them x
