My Netherland Dwarf is 7-8 years old. He had a guinea pig companion for about 2 years and was quite upset when she passed away 5 months ago. I try to give him as much attention and out of cage time as I can now and he has perked up quite a bit. I think he is happier now than he has been in the past few years, but I still wonder if he is lonely. I am going to be going away to school in 2 months & I know he will not get nearly as much attention as I give him now. He has always been good around other species but Im thinking about getting him a female rabbit of similar age for when I go away. Is he too old to be introduced to another rabbit?

Is he neutered? My boy Gareth was neutered and bonded with his first bun wife at 6 years old after living a solo life, I don’t think its ever too late to try and bond a pair of bunnies.

I wouldn’t put another guinea pig and rabbit together though, when I was a nipper my parents bought me a rabbit and guinea pig, rabbit tried to mount guinea and squished it

AxGizmo is right. I don’t think it’s ever too late to bond bunnies. It sounds like it would be a great idea to get him a buddy. You’ll want to make sure both are spayed/neutered first. If you plan on adopting a bunny from a rescue, you could take your bunny with you and go bunny dating. That way you can find which rabbit he likes and would be easiest to bond him with.

I had a 10 year old rabbit that was introduced to a probably one year old rabbit that we found on the street. He was already neutered and we had her spayed and they loved each other, so it worked out very well. It may be more difficult to find older females in rescues, but it would be great if you did find and adopt one, since an older bunny usually isn’t the first choice for most people.

Thanks everyone! He is neutered. Am I best to start off fresh with a baby bunny or find an adult?

It would be best to find an adult, and it would be good if you could find one close to his age, but that’s not totally necessary. Almost all rescues and some shelters/humane societies will either already have the rabbits spayed and neutered or they will do so when you adopt. That will save you money and time. If you did get a baby bunny, you would have to wait until she was old enough to be spayed, then have the recuperation period, before you could start bonding. So that’s another reason why getting an adult rabbit would be better.

Here are 2 good articles on bonding:

Aw yes, I’d go for an adult too – maybe not so old (you wouldn’t want him to lose 2 partners in case the other doesn’t outlive him) but give one a home, yes please. And in the unlikely event that they don’t bond quickly – atleast they will have physical companionship across an xpen gate.

I’m currently trying to bond my 9 year old Mini-Lop with my other boy (who’s age is unknown). Older bunnies need love too
