Recently it was discovered that Sherlock is blind.  He seems alright, he’s on antibiotics right now and takes those well.

I was wondering if anyone here has experience with blind bunnies? Would getting another bunny be a good or a bad idea right now? Any tips are appreciated.

        Thanks,

        -Neon

I wouldn’t get another bunny because the other bunny may try to be the ruler of the cage and Sherlock may get jealous about not getting as much attention. Bunnies don’t really use their eyesight like humans do, they don’t have the best eyesight anyway so it probably isn’t too horrible for him. If he seems happy I wouldn’t try to change his life by getting another bunny because it may make him happier or sad or mad. If he seems happy I would just keep every thing the same so that you don’t stress him out.

          Hope I helped. Good Luck.

I had one bunny in the past who became blind from cataracts when he was elderly. He possibly had a tiny bit of sight – maybe he could make out some shapes, but we knew that he had very little if any sight. He seemed to cope well. We made sure to not move furniture around or place new objects on the floor, and always kept his food and water bowls in the same place. He would occasionally bump into a table leg or something, but for the most part he had no trouble getting around. If they have sight to start with, they have mapped out their territory already and know where things are, which is why it’s important to keep things in their original spots. They can also sense where walls and furniture are.

Regarding getting another bunny to be a companion for Sherlock, I’m not sure. With him being blind, it might make it more difficult to bond him with another rabbit, or it might be more stressful to bring in another rabbit that he can’t see. My old, blind rabbit already had a companion, so we didn’t have to try to introduce someone new to him. Maybe someone else here has had more experience and will have a different opinion on getting a companion.
