I recently purchased two rabbits(at four weeks, they are siblings mother died hence why I was able to get them so young), the breeder said they were both female but now that they are a bit older I resexed them and discovered that one is a female and one is a male. I was already planning on getting them fixed but my vet is unwilling to fix them until they are at least 3 months of age, this brings on the question on when I should separate them. Currently they are 7 weeks of age and they are very closely bonded. I was planning on when I separate them to put their cages right next to each other so they can see and even nuzzle each other and than rebonding them when they are fixed and recovered from surgery. Since this is my first time owning rabbits I’m not really sure how any of this works so any help on how to rebond them and when to separate them and all that would be greatly appreciated. They are mini rexes if that changes anything.

Hello and welcome. Yes it is recommended to separate them. Rabbits have been known to be able to breed from as young as 9-10 weeks of age , so separating as soon as you can is definitely recommended. A double barrier an inch apart is also required because rabbits are also capable of mating through bars/mesh. In regards to their current bond, baby bonds are not considered proper bonds. Almost all baby rabbits get along and snuggle, but as they grow and mature these bonds often fall apart and the rabbits can start biting, chasing and fighting once the hormones start to kick in. For this reason it’s better the separate them to prevent any chance of that happening, then once they have both had time to heal from their surgeries and you’ve allowed 6 weeks for hormones to dissipate from their systems, then you can start the proper bonding process in neutral territory. Hope that helps

Thank you so much!! Any advice or information helps greatly as I’m pretty clueless to it all, I won’t be able to get a cage until Tuesday but when I get one I’ll definitely separate the two of them than.
