I have a 6 month old Netherland Dwarf female, her name is Luna and I just had her spayed two weeks ago today.  I really want to get her a companion so she’s not alone when I’m at work or school (I also would love another bunny around the house ), I’m interested in a 9 week old French Lop male I found at the shelter.  I would plan to have him neutered when he’s older. I’m new to the bonding process, but I’m hoping that since they’re both babies they’ll bond easier and the bond will be strong.  Also, I’m moving across the country at the end of August, and I thought that if they had each other the drive would be a bit less stressful for them.

Do you think it would be a good idea for me to get her a companion now, or should I wait until I’m already moved?

Also, I’m totally new to the bonding process so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It would be better to wait until that French Lop is older and neutered before attempting to bond him with Luna. If you did get him now and start bonding, you would have to separate them in a few weeks when he matured and his hormones kicked in. He would almost certainly start humping Luna then, which could easily lead to fighting and injuries. Instead of trying to bond them now, then having to separate them in a few weeks and re-bond them after his neuter surgery and recuperation period, it would be easier to wait and start the bonding after his surgery. You could go ahead and get him and keep him in the same room as Luna, but he would need to be in a separate cage or x-pen.

Here are 2 good articles on bonding:

I have found it helpful to have an x-pen to use for bonding. It forces them to be close, but they still have a little space to get away, and you are right there with them in case you need to break up some scuffling.

You should bring Luna to the pet store/shelter/vet and let her choose the bunny friend she wants. That way you know she will be happy with her friend. Before bonding them, make sure they are both spayed.
