I only recently posted to another forum here asking what I might be able to do to integrate my

bunnies into the household better. We took over care of our two – a bonded pair – after watching

the neighbors basically neglect them for a year or so.

Last night I got home from work and Vega, our rex girl, was acting lethargic. We went out in the evening,

and while out I spent a lot of time on my phone looking up her symptoms. We decided she may have a

belly ache – possibly from starting her on some immune support treats last week and feeding her some berries

this weekend.  When we got home she wasn’t much better, and we tried enticing her to eat with raisins and

parsley and her favorite apple treats. She nibbled the apple treat a little, but otherwise… not really interested.

My husband and I decided to give it the night and if she still wasn’t well, bringing her to the vet

        in the morning.

This morning she was still lethargic, so we called the vet and got her in first thing. The vet suspected GI Stasis and

said she was in bad shape – very pale and low temperature. She started Vega on IV fluids and pain killers right away,

drew blood and found an elevated white blood cell count so started her on antibiotics.

Vega passed about an hour later. We got her to the vet, got her  to help, too  late.

I know in my heart of hearts that the last year, Vega had everything she could possibly need. She had love

and a big indoor cage and toys and leafy greens and lots of hay and a litter box that was cleaned for her

every single day and  her brother Thabbit. She was about 8 years old, and on at least her 3rd home.

But I of course have the usual guilt feelings of not bringing her to the emergency vet last night, of not

realizing that maybe the pellets weren’t being eaten as fast as they used to be meant a bad sign.

Her remains are upstairs right now in the cage with Thabbit so he has some time to know what’s happening,

not just that we took her and she never came back. We’ve read that’s the best thing to do, and he’s come to

her once so far to groom her face a bit.

Now we will keep an eye on him, make sure he’s as OK as he can be, and try to integrate him more into the

household, since he won’t have her to cuddle with anymore.

I’m so sad today. I just keep reminding myself that she had a great life for the last year, and we did the

        best we could.

Thank you for reading, for listening, for understanding.

I’m so sorry for your loss.
It was truly lovely of you to take her in and make her last year a great year. She was rather old for a rabbit and it’s not possible to say what actually took her. The high white count likely meant she had sth else going on that only manifested itself as stasis, sth like cancer. I very much doubt this had to do with the immuno-support treats or the berries. Immuno-support treats are mostly herbs and berries are low in sugar, most buns have no problem with berries.

Thank you for being a great bunny mommy. I hope Thabbit will be fine. You’ll need to give him a bit of extra attention now, of course, to help him get over his loss.

            Binky Free, Vega.

Thank you for the sympathy, and for the reassurances. It was all so fast, sudden. We’re so very sad tonight.
