This weekend is the 4th of July and here in the US that means a lot of fireworks.

This is my first summer in this apartment, so I don’t know if the locals will be setting them off, but I’m SURE it will freak my bunny out if they do. I’m worried that it will send him into a panic and he’ll hurt himself.

Does anyone have any experience with this? How do you prepare your buns for firework season?

Find something yr bun likes to watch. Star Wars works for our buns. Play it a bit louder each evening. By 4th July, have bun used to watching/being near tv playing film nice and loud (any film with plenty of flashes/explosions is ideal)

That’s a great idea! He doesn’t really watch TV, but he’s used to it being on. I try to avoid a high volume, but desensitizing him is a great thought. Thanks!

Seconding putting on a tv show or playing music, something to create noise to drown out the fireworks. My trio doesnt like loud noises and this will be their first 4th. Ive got a little radio set up about 4 feet from their cage just in case they do start to get nervous

You can find sounds of fireworks online, people use that to desentizise dogs to fireworks. Here’s one link:

As Gina says, starts with the sound on low then increase the volume gradually. I remember I had a whole CD record with “scary” sounds for my dog when she was a pup. Fireworks, ambulances, demolition-work, traffic, gun shots etc.

Hopefully any fireworks your buns hear won’t last long.

We will be having our local fireworks on Canada Day, July 1st. I’m starting to become anti-fireworks so I’m torn between taking Everly and staying home. The City’s big fireworks display can only be heard a bit from my house so my animals are okay. I feel so bad for any animals, especially strays that get frightened. I’ve heard it can really mess birds and wildlife up as well.

Haha, Gina, your buns are fangirls???

I’m always amazed at which sounds bug my buns, and which sounds don’t.  Some big, loud crashing sounds barely phase them, but a soft whispery ssshhhh of a sound must be hard-wired into their brains as SNAKE or something.  But none of my buns have ever really been bothered by fireworks.  Their ears track them sure, but no panic.  They watch your emotional reaction, too, so if you take them in stride, they’ll be more likely to, too.

Lagomorphic, that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking. Sounds of fireworks don’t seem to phase my bunnies one bit, but other, must softer noises can really scare them. Perhaps fireworks are not in the bunny’s repertoire of “dangerous noises” since few natural predators signal their arrival by cannon-fire.

Emotional reaction is important with all pets so it’s important for the humans to act like everything is perfectly normal.

Thanks guys! You’re right about some sounds being scary, while others I would think would frighten him don’t faze him at all.

I usually pretend to groom myself when anything potentially distressing is going on so he knows I’m not scared. Who knows if that really works, but we haven’t had any freak outs in a while (knock on wood) so hopefully this weekend will go by smoothly.
