Please help me determine what is best for my bunnies’ well-being.

I have two rabbits. First I had Nibbler, a sweet docile guy. He is not fixed and about 2 years old now. About 3 months ago I got a juvenile bunny named Scruffy. I bonded them and they loved cuddling and grooming each other.Nibbles would mount Scruffy and Scruffy would run but after awhile he just learned to not mind it. Now Scruffy has hit puberty and is larger than Nibbler and tried to mount him. This is where I need help.

They have gotten into a couple of tussles but no one was injured. This weekend, Scruffy bit Nibbler’s private areas. I have separated them by dividing the cage for now.I don’t know what to do now. I am worried about Nibbler’s well-being. Another cage is not an option (I have hit financial hardship). Will getting them fixed help this problem? Should I find Scruffy a new home? Please help!

You definitely have to keep your rabbits separated until both have been neutered and a few weeks have passed to get all of the hormones out of their system. Then you will have to go through proper bonding procedures. Rabbits can severely injure each other when fighting, so they cannot be together until after the neuters and recuperation. Make sure that they can’t bite through whatever you have dividing the cage. The surgeries are not inexpensive and they will certainly cost more than a new cage. There may be some lower cost spay/neuter clinics in your area, but a lot of them are for dogs and cats only. There is also Care Credit, where you pay with a credit card and pay it back in installments with no interest. Some vets participate in that.  You should make a vet appointment now and have Nibbler looked at.  His injury might need some attention and it could get worse if not treated.

Here are 2 good articles on bonding:

You will have to keep them completely separated until you can get them neutered. Thats the first thing: separating them. Second second thing you have to do is get him to a vet. If his penis is bruised, swelling, or bleeding it can become infected and/or cause him to hold in his urine. Both are very harmful. He needs to be seen by a rabbit certified vet so he can get the proper medication and help so nothing bad happens to him

After he is healed, start saving for neuters. Neuters will definitely make it easier for the two to bond again and they will likely go back to being their cuddle buddy selves after they are both healed after their neuters
