I’m a bit new to having a bunny, he humps me and others quite a bit (any tips on stopping that would be great) and I was told getting him fixed this late might not end up changing his behavior. Could that make it so I couldn’t bond him easily? I would love to get a female lionhead bunny, or a female rescue bunny which would be older, probably closer to mines age. If its unlikely that I could bond them, I’ll probably stick with just Sev. Just thought it might be worth asking about.

Surgery is hard on an older rabbit, but i dont think 3 years old is considered “old” yet. I would talk to your rabbit certified vet about neutering and see what they say for your bun. Hormonal driven issues will leave after a month or few after he heals from being neutered

If you’re not going to neuter him, I wouldn’t recommend trying to bond at all. Even with a spayed female, his hormones will be too strong and he will likely want to hump her all the time. Surgery on a 3 year old is just fine. Humping is mainly a hormonal behaviour so getting him neutered will at the very least decrease the frequency of it, depending how long he’s been humping for, it may not go away completely. Some hormonal behaviours can become habitual behaviours, but neutering at 3 years is just as safe as neutering a 6 month old rabbit. I would certainly get it done, because it most likely will calm him down a lot, and he’ll be a lot happier not having that constant drive to hump things all the time. It’s the only way that you’ll get it to stop.

I agree with the others. 3 years is still relatively young to be neutered. Plus the surgery is not as invasive for males as it is for females. If you would ever like to bond him with another rabbit, getting him neutered is a must.

One more vote for neutering! My first bunny, Bun Bun, was of undetermined age (I assumed a year old because I so badly wanted him to be really young so we would have him for longer, but I think he was more like 3 or 4!). He sprayed and humped, but once we got him neutered, he stopped within about six weeks. Two weeks after his neuter (not recommended, we should’ve waited a month) we adopted a spayed wife for BunBun. He humped her often at first, but tapered off and stopped within the first month that we had her.

Definitely worth getting your bunny snipped so he can live happily with another bunny. Even if he doesn’t like other rabbits, which would be unusual, he will be a calmer, cleaner, happier companion once fixed!
