So I’ve had my bunny for 2 months now but just recently moved back in my family’s house for the summer I have his cage in the living room. I let him run around 2-4 hours in this own corner in the living toom. but my family is highly asthmatic and ever since I brought thumper in, their asthma has gotten worse. Recently, my grandma’s asthma has being acting up. My mom suggested to keep him outside but I’m scared of the sickness he can get from the outside world. My backup plan is the bathroom. We live in an apartment so the bathroom has no windows. How does this sound? It would probably mean he’s in the dark except for the light coming from the door. He stays in his cage most of the day and I let him out 2-4 hours. I need feedback on this. Thanks!

I’d opt for the bathroom over the outside, as you’re saying, the outside is full of dangers for a rabbit.
I’d be a little concerned about the light-issue though, but rabbits don’t need a lot of light since they are crepuscular and tend to rest underground in their burrows during the day. Could you get an inexpensive battery-driven LED-lamp that could be on in the bathroom during the day?

I don’t like the idea of the bathroom…I mean, do you take showers in it? It can get really damp and humid in a bathroom (without windows even), which is not good for rabbits. And also, rabbits do need sunlight to produce vitamin D, which is essential for their health.

Have you tried Petal Cleanse? It seems to work wonders for quite a lot of people with allergies. You spray it on your rabbit’s fur.

Maybe you could have him in a room, and when you are with him to have one set of clothes on and you change to something else, when you leave the room?

Have you tried an electronic air cleaner? That often helps with pet allergies. What kind of bedding or litter are you using? Sometimes that is the culprit, not the rabbit itself. Also, what hay are you using? The hay could be dusty, and some types, such as Timothy, are more prone to causing allergies. You should keep your rabbit well brushed. Do that when others aren’t around. Also, frequently vacuum the areas he is in. If you keep your bunny well groomed and his area clean, plus experiment with different bedding, litter or hay, and try the electric air cleaner, that might greatly reduce the problems that your family is having.

I agree with tobyluv and the air cleaner. I have terrible allergies and asthma so when I got Julep I also got an air cleaner with an HEPA filter. It has helped me so much. She used to live in my room with me all the time and I didn’t have many problems at all. Now she has her own space even though she prefers to be under my bed all day. If you can afford an air cleaner it could really help make a difference for your family and keep you from having to confine your bunny so much. It also helps with any hay allergies!
