Hi everyone, I’m new here. I have two gorgeous mini lops, Marshmallow & Fudge.
We got them on the same day two months ago when Marshmallow was 8 weeks old and Fudge was 10 weeks old. They’re not sisters but they were living together when we got them. So we kept them together, in the same cage and they’ve always got along brilliantly, cleaning eachother and laying together.
Last night I heard a lot of commotion going on and went downstairs to find Fudge chasing Marshmallow around the cage and nipping at her when ever she caught up. It was 2am so I took Marshmallow out and let her roam the living room for the night and left fudge shut away. Today I have let fudge out and after 10 minutes she was humping Marshmallow (her head end) and chasing her again. So this time I shut Marshmallow away and let fudge have some time out on her own. After her being out on her own most of the day, I let marshmallow out and she’s started chasing her straight away.
Neither of them have been spayed because they’re not old enough. Is this normal ‘growing up’ behaviour? Have I done the wrong thing by separating them?
I would be very grateful for any help or advice anyone can give me. I’d love them to live happily together but I’m happy to separate them if I need to. Many thanks in advance!

You’ve done the right thing separating them. When they’re young, it’s common that they’ll get along but this isn’t a true bond. Once the hormones arrive, it can all change. You could probably allow them short interactions as long as it’s supervised.   Things might calm down a bit. Be absolutely certain they are both female though.

If you do plan to get them spayed, you could try bonding them after they are well recovered.

Thankyou for your reply! I do plan on getting them spayed as soon as they are old enough.
I slept downstairs with them last night and kept marshmallow out all night but fudge was not happy about it! She was kicking the cage all night and has thrown the litter box all over the place. I’d swap them over so fudge is out but she’s naughty and I couldn’t sleep with her out, it looks like I need to invest in another cage and find some more space! Thankyou again!

Also, by now would it be pretty obvious if fudge was a boy? I can’t see any difference with them both that stands out to me

Not necessarily… Sometimes the testicles are late descenders or one or both don’t descend at all. The other thing is they can draw them back up into the abdomen. When stressed, for instance.
