My 2 month old rabbit doesn’t seem to know how to use the rabbit waterbottel! This an issue becuase then I have to fill two bowls of water because I’m afraid of him running out of water and he spills them over! He needs to use the waterbottel becuase then I’ll know how much water he’s had and that he always has water! He’s sniffed both water bottles I have in his cage but doesn’t use them, he prefers to drink out of a bowl. Anyone know how to teach a rabbit to use a waterbottel? Maybe he’ll just…learn? I just don’t want him to ever to run out of water! Thanks

Until he learns to drink out of the water-bottle make sure you use a ceramic bowl, which is a lot harder to tip over. From the tips I’ve heard, you can try to rub bananna on the mouth-part to encourage him to lick it or dab some water on it.

It is recommended that buns drink out of a bowl – most buns prefer it, and it allows them to sip the water the way rabbits drink in the wild. A crock pot or some other very heavy ceramic dish with a nice wide base should prevent your bun from knocking it over or throwing it. If worried, keep the bottle as a backup, but I think it’s evident why your bun won’t learn how to drink from a bottle: he prefers his dish.

Having said that, unless your bun uses his water dish as a paddling pool, and barring a bone dry environment where massive evaporation occurs, you can still get a pretty good idea about how much he’s drinking if you know how much water you put in the dish (my bun has a 500ml dish and usually drinks half of it in a day).

I have a bottle over a bowl, they will drink from the bowl as a first choice but only touch the bottle if the bowl is empty

I always use bowls. My bunny Lukie was an expert water bowl tipper, so I put one ceramic bowl inside a larger, slightly more shallow bowl. The weight and wife base of gravity makes it impossible for him to overturn it, and he has stopped trying ☺. His pellets and greens bowls still got thrown around regularly though- I finally got one of those black plastic things used to put shoes in when you walk in from outside- like a mat with a rim around it. i just dump his pellets in there and use a lightweight unbreakable plastic plate for his greens. Has to be lightweight because once he tossed his plate up in,but air with such vigor that it bounced off of his head ?. He was very displeased.
