Hi guys, I have decided it’s time to get my 6-7 month old neutered male a female buddy .

I have been looking at rehoming centres but the closest one is 200 miles away, would my rabbit be ok with a journey that long? Any tips to make the journey more comfortable? There are a lot of lovely females there that i’d like him to meet

I have not phoned the centre yet but is it likely I will have to go through with him several times for bonding sessions? I don’t know if my rabbit(or myself) could handle that much travel! I have considered buying a female but I worry that they might not become friends and I would have to rehome her . This has left me a bit confused on what I should do, what are the chances of a bonding not working out? Should I adopt or buy a baby?

Thank you for any advice x

Are you happy to say your general location? Members here might be able to find some adoptable rabbits closer to you. Have you looked at ads for private rehomings? An owner might work with you on the rabbits meeting several times prior to adopting.

I’m in the Aberdeenshire area in Scotland, there are a couple of centres but they’ve said they rarely get rabbits in. The ones they do have at the moment can’t be with other rabbits or are already in pairs or have an unfriendly nature. I’ve had a look around for people rehoming their own rabbit, there is one I could try about 70 miles away which is an un neutered male. There are a few selling 8/9 week old babies in the 60-70 mile range, but if they bonded would they possibly grow up to dislike my rabbit still?

If you adopt a female from a rescue, it will likely already be spayed, or they will spay her before you take her home. That will save you money and trouble, as well as rescuing a bunny. If you were to buy a baby bunny, you could go ahead and try to bond her with your male, but when she reached puberty, you would have to separate them, have her spayed, let her recuperate, then go through bonding again.

I never took any of my rabbits for dates. When I wanted a new companion for a rabbit, I would go to the shelter/rescue and adopt one. I never took my current rabbit with me. All of my bondings have worked out well and were pretty quick and easy. Not all bondings are that easy, of course. I have seen posts from other members here who got a companion for their rabbit without taking it for a date, so it certainly can be done.

Is there not an SSPCA centre in Aberdeen or a pets at home, they have animals for adoption as well as sale. Gumtree is nowhere near as bad a bet as folk make it out to be either, i got both my guys from people on there. I adopted Ron without Bramble ever meeting him and they were best friends within a week. I find it hard to believe that there are no centres with rabbits in a big place like Aberdeen, we have at least half a dozen in Glasgow some of them specialist rabbit rescues that people have set up where the buns live with foster families rather than in an actual centre
