I just got a 2 month old bunny from the humane society three days ago. I’ve had a rabbit about a decade ago so I don’t think I’m allergic, but the first night my eyes were itching badly, becuase I hadn’t been washing my hands after holding the rabbit. After that I started washing my hands each time and not have no eye issues. But since the morning after I got him, I’ve had this weird sick feeling, I can almost feel sounds (my head throbs seemingly with my heartbeat or when there’s loud sounds), my body feels tired and I almost feel faint like. My bunny has scratched me but the scratches disappear after a few minutes, skin is NEVER broke. He hasn’t bit me and he has no diseases. No running nose or throat issues. Just a faint throbbing in my head and pulsing through my body and weakness for the past two days. I’ve had time away from the rabbit and the house, but the symptoms don’t disappear. So, I’m hoping this sounds like I do not have an allergy to the bunny. I have no other allergies and never experienced this before, just seems like a coincidence. Please let me know if this does or doesn’t sound like allergies!!

It certainly doesn’t sound like typical allergies.

Perhaps shower then wear clothes you haven’t been wearing while handling the rabbit and see if symptoms persist while out of the house. If that is the case, it’s probably time to see your doctor!

Some people experience allergies from things like the hay or wood products used for animal bedding more so.

Also, call the humane society and find out if they treat the rabbits with anything before they send them off with new owners. Just thinking if possibility you are hypersensitive to a anti parasite medication. It seems unlikely, but won’t hurt to find out if they’ve used anything.

I also want to add that it is possible to become allergic to things as you get older. When i was younger, my mom and i had rabbits for about 4 years. During that last year, my mom became deathly allergic. It slowly progressed from sneezing and watery eyes to full on not being able to breathe. We checked if it was the bunnys food, bedding, if she was just allergic to his shed, ect. Turns out, she just developed an allergy to rabbits in general. Even now, about 17 years later, she cant be around rabbits due to the allergy. Once you rule out being allergic to the hay or bedding, i suggest you see a doctor about possible allergy medication you can try to see if that helps
