I’ve had my bun for about a year now and he has always gone through his hay so quickly and would need refilling once a day sometimes even twice. however over the past month ive only been topping it up once every couple of days.

Is is time for a change of hay? Or is there something I can try to get him interested in his hay again?

I have tried adding his foraging leaves – he loves the blackcurrant packet i get from Pets At Home but he’s just started picking them out and only eating smaller portions of hay. Ive tried as I was advised on a different site to reduce the amount of his pellets as someone said he may be filling up on those first, however, he still eats the same amount of hay and this didn’t help at all.

Is this something to be worried about, just a phase or something i can quick fix at home myself?

With a change like that, I would firstly get his teeth (molars) checked out. He may need light sedation for the vet to get a thorough look. Even the tiniest spur can be enough to irritate and cause change in eating habit.
I often hear how a vet will say there are small points but nothing they think would be an issue… but if under sedation, they’ll often bur them off anyway. But if you think about how issues in the mouth feel magnified for us, it must be similar for rabbits. Like when you get a small bit of something stuck between your teeth and it can feel like it’s big. Or soreness or cut in the tissue and just how irritating it is.

Thank you for replying. I will give my vet a ring as soon as they open and see when they can fit him in to have a look. I didn’t know if he was just filling up on pellets or something. But he scoffs all his pellets and veggies down straight away and is still eating his hay just only about 2/3 to 1/2 of the amount he used to.
